What effect does loud DJ noise have on health? What are the government guidelines on loud noise?

Expert: Dr Rachit Saxena, Senior Consultant, Cardiac Surgery, Narayana Hospital (Gurugram)

Question: How well does the sound suit our ears? answer- The unit of measurement for sound intensity is the decibel (DB). According to the Hearing Health Foundation, an organization that conducts research on loud noises, sounds of 70 decibels or less are considered safe for humans. This is the sound of a normal conversation between two people. However, if a person speaks loudly close to their ears, the decibel level of their voice may be higher than normal.

Question: How many decibels of noise can be dangerous? answer- Dr Racit Saxena explains that continuous exposure to noise above 70 decibels is dangerous. The sound from our personal music devices i.e. headphones and earphones is 75-80 decibels at 60% volume level. At full volume, this sound reaches nearly 110 decibels. If a person is exposed to noise above 85 decibels for more than 8 hours per day, their hearing capacity may decrease. Keep in mind that as the decibel level increases, our safe listening time will decrease.

Question: What types of health problems can occur due to loud noise? answer- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an increase in decibel level beyond the prescribed limit not only affects hearing ability but also causes many serious diseases. Loud noise can cause irritation and irritability. Apart from this, loud noise can also cause heart-related problems including insomnia.

Check out the chart below to see what types of illnesses can be caused by loud noise.

Question: How can loud sound from a DJ or speaker cause heart disease? answer- Dr. Racchit Saxena explains that there is a direct connection between our ears and our heart. This means that any sound that reaches the ears reaches the heart through the nerves. When the loud sound of the DJ continuously reaches the ears, the heartbeat increases. This increases stress, anxiety and fear. In such a situation, the blood in the ear veins begins to thicken. If this persists for a long time, it can cause a heart attack.

Question: Which people are most exposed to loud noise from the DJ or speaker? answer- According to a report from American New Jersey Medics, people living in very noisy areas are at higher risk of heart attacks. This figure increases more in areas where airports are located. In these areas, the heart attack rate increases up to 72%.

Apart from this, loud noise is also very dangerous for children, elderly people and people with certain health conditions. Understand this from the graph below.

Question: What is the government rule regarding loud noise? answer- The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has fixed different noise levels for different areas. Understand this from the graph below.

Question – How to take care of yourself in noise? answer- Dr. Rachit Saxena explains that if a person’s hearing becomes weak due to loud noise, there is no treatment. Therefore, the best way to avoid it is to avoid it. Don’t go to places where a DJ or speaker is playing very loudly or where a machine is making noise. If it is very important to go, take some precautions.

Understand them from the graph below.

Question: How can we identify how much noise is present in a particular location? answer- If you work on a construction site, night club or any other place where the environment is very noisy. You can use technology to find out how much noise is there. Nowadays, there are many mobile applications that can measure the prescribed decibel level at a given location. Below are the names of some mobile applications. Which you can download from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
