For the film Dangal, Aamir Khan and the rest of the star cast took help from a dialect coach to learn Haryanvi.

Have you ever noticed how actresses of foreign origin like Katrina Kaif, Jacqueline Fernandez and Nora Fatehi speak Hindi in films? A special coach is also hired to teach them the language and dialect. They are called dialect coaches.

In recent years, the role of the dialect coach in films has increased. Language has a direct impact on an actor’s performance. Dialect coaching plays a vital role in improving the character of an actor. People still remember Kangana Ranaut and Aamir Khan’s Haryanvi accent in the films Tanu Weds Manu and Dangal.

In the new episode of Reel to Real, we talk about the role of the dialect coach in films. For this, we spoke to famous dialect coaches Vikas Kumar, Hetal Waria and Sunita Sharma.

He said that after learning the language, when John Abraham gave his first blow, he began to cry. At the same time, while preparing for Dangal, Aamir Khan took a lot of time to learn the language compared to other actors.

What is the difference between pronunciation and dialect? Accents are the way people pronounce words and are only part of a dialect. A person’s dialect is also made up of their vocabulary, grammar, and use of local slang.

There are no rules for teaching language to actors Vikas said, “There is no rule or formula for teaching language to an actor. For example, the English accent is visible in the speech of Jacqueline Fernandez and Katrina Kaif. In such a situation, efforts are made to ensure that both have less English accent and are fluent in the Hindi language.

Alongside language teaching, we also work on the transmission of dialogue. John Abraham worked alongside Shahrukh Khan in the film Pathan. His Hindi is good, but he only focuses on the dialogue. This is why we also worked on this.

In the film Ishqiya, Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi’s character was Bhopali. The director of the film wanted both of them to have a Bhopali flavor in their speech. Then we did that too.

Vikas also shared his experience of working with Jacqueline and Katrina. He said, “I met them both when they had learned Hindi well. I met Katrina during the movie Tiger 3. The most special thing about Katrina and Jacqueline is that they both also request the script in Hindi (Devanagari) which brings more perfection.

Actors learn the language through writing and audio. Vikas told that during the workshop, he tried to teach the language through writing and audio. For some projects, Vikas even records the entire film script in his own voice to teach it to the actors. With its help, actors can easily work on their language.

Vicky Kaushal and Huma Qureshi work quickly on language Hetal Waria also spoke about the challenges faced while teaching the dialect. He said there was much less time available for language teaching than for other work. Each actor has a limit. Some actors learn quickly, while others take time.

Hetal added, “Like Vicky Kaushal in the film Sam Bahadur and Huma Qureshi in Tarla, both of them learned the language very quickly. I didn’t have to work hard on any of them.

John started to cry as he spoke Vikas worked with John Abraham in the film Pathan. He said, “Before Pathan, in the film Satyamev Jayate, I was his dialect coach. Before filming, I worked on his dialogues using many techniques.

He was to recite a verse in the opening scene of the film. When he recited this verse during practice, his eyes would become moist. John said he had never delivered such clear dialogue before. It’s not just one case. This happens to many actors.

People look down on language teaching. Dialect coaches don’t get a lot of fees. Prices change depending on the project. Higher rights are paid for big budget films. Not only that, but people also consider this work small. Besides the low fees, a dialect coach also has very little time to teach actors. This also poses problems. Actors must have at least 3 months to master any language.

Vicky learned many languages for Sam Bahadur Hetal Waria worked with Vicky in the film Sam Bahadur. He told that in real life, Sam Bahadur knew several languages. This is why Vicky also had to learn a language. Vicky had started working on her dialect well before filming began.

Hetal said she and Vicky were sentenced to 1-2 months. Thanks to this, Vicky had worked well on herself.

Aamir Khan took time to learn the Haryanvi language There is also an incident related to the movie Dangal. Sunita Sharma was responsible for teaching the Haryanvi dialect to the actors of this film.

Talking about this, Sunita said, “I got this film because of Tanu Weds Manu. Everyone loved Kangana’s Haryanvi tone in Tanu Weds Manu. After that, the makers of Dangal approached me. The rest of the star cast of the film, including Aamir sir, was also very hardworking.

Interestingly, compared to other actors, Aamir sir took a little longer to learn the language. Although he followed all my instructions. He had also prepared the notes by writing them correctly.

Kangana Ranaut’s learning speed is good Sunita was Kangana Ranaut’s dialect coach in the film Tanu Weds Manu. Talking about it, he said, “The experience of working with Kangana was very good. Its learning speed is also very good. She understands things and works too.

Actresses master the language faster than male actors. Sunita added, “I believe the learning speed of actresses is higher than that of male actors. I taught Bhojpuri accent to Soha Ali Khan in the film Atrangi Re. She also learned very quickly.

The second part of the film Chhori will be released soon. Soha Ali Khan plays the lead role in this film. I coached him. Its learning speed is also very good.
