Former Australian opener David Warner has been named the new captain of the Sydney Thunders for the upcoming Big Bash League season. He will replace Chris Green. The franchise gave this information Wednesday evening. Warner was captain of this franchise in 2011.
Twelve days ago, on October 25, Cricket Australia’s conduct committee had lifted Warner’s lifetime ban from captaincy. He was banned for ball tampering during the Test match against South Africa in 2018. Besides Warner, Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft were also found guilty in the ball tampering case, and were banned from cricket for one year each. He had asked Cricket Australia to lift the ban.

After becoming captain, Warner said:
Being captain of the Thunder means a lot to me. I was part of the team from the start and now it feels good to be back with a “C” in front of my name. I am excited to lead the franchise and share my experience with young people.

The franchise was only able to win one league title. The team won the title by defeating the Melbourne Stars in the 2015–16 season.
