DY Chandrachud is the 50th Chief Justice of India. He spoke with an Amnesty International lawyer during the inauguration of the museum on the Supreme Court campus.
Chief Justice DY Chandrachud retires on November 10. On Thursday, CJI Chandrachud questioned a lawyer created using artificial intelligence (AI). AI’s lawyer responded to this with the same expression that real lawyers give in court.
During the inauguration of the National Judicial Museum and Supreme Court Archives, CJI asked Amnesty International’s lawyer: Is the death penalty constitutional in India?
In response to this, the AI lawyer, standing in lawyer attire, first put both hands on his arms, moved his fingers, and made some thinking gestures. After that, he responded under cross-examination with both hands open: “Yes, the death penalty is constitutional in India, but it is reserved for very few cases, as determined by the Supreme Court. There is a provision for such punishment in cases of heinous crimes.
Hearing such a pointed response from AI’s lawyer, CJI Chandrachud looked at the other judges present and smiled. The question and answer video of CJI and AI’s lawyer also surfaced.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna was also present alongside the CJI during the inaugural programme. He will take oath as the 51st CJI on November 11.
CJI said people should know the live courtroom experience.
Inaugurating the National Judicial Museum and Archives, the CJI said the artifacts in this new museum show the character of the Supreme Court and its importance. I want this museum to become a place for the younger generation, where there is constant dialogue, children from schools and colleges and ordinary people, who are not necessarily lawyers, should come here and breathe the air that we let’s breathe every day. Through this, ordinary people will know the real experience and importance of the work of law, judges and lawyers. I hope that after I retire, the next judge will also open a museum for the younger generation. This museum is not centered on the judge. It contains what we saw placed in the Constituent Assembly. Things related to the people who created the Constitution are also kept there. The museum also has items related to members of the Bar. It is the members of the Bar who have made the Court what it is today through their courageous action.
The Bar Association boycotted the museum’s dedication ceremony. The former Judges’ Library located on the Supreme Court campus has been transformed into a new museum. However, the executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association boycotted the inauguration ceremony.
The association previously passed a resolution opposing the conversion of the former judge’s library into a museum and demanding the construction of a new cafeteria on the site. The association said the existing cafeteria is not suited to the needs of lawyers.
Chandrachud will retire on November 10, 2024. Justice DY Chandrachud’s full name is Justice Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud. His father, Justice YV Chandrachud, was the country’s 16th CJI. He is famous for his outspoken decisions.
