There is controversy surrounding Vikrant Massey’s upcoming film The Sabarmati Report.
The film is releasing on November 15 – The Sabarmati Report. This film is based on the Godhra incident and the Gujarat riots that followed. The film is also facing controversies after the trailer was released. The film’s lead actor, Vikrant Massey, receives threats. Even his opponents do not spare his 9-month-old child. They also talk nonsense about it.
Vikrant Massey himself revealed this in an interview with Indianewsget. Vikrant said many baked bread in the fire in the Godhra incident, but those who were killed are just statistics.
22 years have passed since the Gujarat riots, but the truth is still not out. Vikrant Massey said he knew the film’s issue was sensitive. He also realized that this issue could be discussed in both positive and negative ways. However, the film’s producer Ekta Kapoor had full confidence in his script.
Vikrant said, “Ekta gave me a long research paper. I realized that if the research is so strong, there is no chance of controversy. At first, I really wondered if this movie was against a particular religion, class, or person. Later, after reading the script, I understood that this film was only about the truth. Unfortunately, 22 years have passed, but this issue has not been discussed much.
I didn’t even let my 9 month old tell Vikrant that he was receiving threats because he was working in a film based on the Gujarat riots. He said: “I receive threatening messages on WhatsApp. I became the father of a son just 9 months ago. He hasn’t even learned to walk yet. There are also false things being said about this. I don’t understand what times we live in. Is it right to suppress art?
The German Nazi army massacred thousands of Jews. Many films have been filmed on it and it has also received awards. Similarly, America dropped atomic bombs on Japan and many award-winning films were filmed there. So why are we putting so much thought into making a film about the events happening here?
I was scared when I signed the film, but if not today, then when? The actress of the film, Raashi Khanna, said that when she got the offer of this film, she was really scared. Indeed, if something happens, the first bomb explodes on the actors.
Rashi said: “There is a saying: if not us, then who, and if not today, then when? Someone will have to make such films. No one knows the real truth about the Godhra incident yet. Where did the fire originate from this incident and how it started, we have shown all these things through the film. When we got the offer for the film, we were really scared. We were afraid something bad would happen. No matter who directs the film, we, the actors, are the face of it. This is why it is also what happens to us the most.
Rashi mainly works in Tamil and Telugu films.
Today the condition of journalism is pathetic, where should I go to find confidence? This entire film was made from a journalism perspective. The story of the film is based on how journalists of the time presented the Godhra incident.
Riddhi Dogra says, “Journalists report news very casually these days. I don’t know where to go to find confidence. All the media try to project themselves. They don’t even bother to show the information. I partnered with this film to raise awareness about this situation.
Riddhi Dogra started her career as a television actress.
English is a global language, but why feel embarrassed to speak Hindi? In the trailer of the film, it is said how English journalists underestimate Hindi journalists. Vikrant says, “People are discriminated against on the basis of language. Nawazuddin Siddiqui once said that because he did not know English, people looked at him differently. I always say that language is just a medium. I believe English is a global language. I have no objection to that. The problem is when you start to feel shy speaking your language.
People from the South are proud of their language, this is not the case in North India. Raashi Khanna also spoke about the language barrier. He said, “I have also worked in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada industries. The people there are very proud of their language. Not knowing English is not a problem there.
While in North India, Hinglish (Hindi-English mixture) is used more. Here, those who do not know English benefit from reduced rates. I think just like Southerners respect their language, why can’t we do the same?
At the time of this incident in Gujarat, Narendra Modi was the chief minister of the state. In March 2002, he formed the Nanavati-Shah Commission to investigate the Godhra incident. Retired High Court Justice KG Shah and retired Supreme Court Justice GT Nanavati became members. The commission presented the first part of its report in September 2008. In this, the Godhra incident was described as a well-planned conspiracy. Furthermore, Narendra Modi, his ministers and senior officers Justice KG Shah died in 2009. After which, retired judge of the Gujarat High Court, Justice Akshay Mehta became a member and then the name of the commission became Nanavati-Mehta Commission. The commission presented the second part of its report in December 2019. Here too, what was said in the first part of the report was repeated.
