This time the success story is that of filmmaker Rohit Shetty.

“When I was very young, the shadow of my father disappeared from my mind. I was aware of the condition of the house. It is for this reason that he took the responsibilities of the family on his own shoulders. I worked hard day and night. I worked 3-3 shifts a day, so there was no shortage of work. People think I didn’t struggle. Like other wrestlers, I too faced setbacks, but I never quit. I was scared after tripping several times, but I kept moving.

So says Rohit Shetty, one of the most famous directors in the film industry. Rohit is known for his big films like Golmaal, All the Best and Singham. However, there was a time when he received only Rs 35 as honorarium. Now, Rohit’s recently released film Singhan Again is setting new records at the box office.

Rohit’s story from floor to floor, in his own words…

After his father’s death, his financial situation deteriorated, so he started earning money. Rohit said he decided to take up acting after seeing his father. He says: “My childhood was like that of normal children. My father worked as a stunt director in films. He has also acted in some films. He was very well known in the industry at that time. There was always a cinematic atmosphere at home. Every time I went out with him, all I heard about was movies. This is the reason why we have not discovered any other world than this one. I had decided from my childhood that whatever work my father did, I would also do the same.

However, everything changed after my father died. I was young when he died. Over time, the family’s financial situation also deteriorated. This is why I started working very early. Secondly, there was also the passion to do better work in the world of cinema.

The woman visible in the yellow circle is Rohit’s mother. He has also worked in many films.

Rohit entered the industry at the age of 17. Rohit was 17 years old when he entered the industry. Even though Rohit had knowledge in the world of cinema, he too had to struggle to find work. It often happened that he had no money at all. It was for this reason that he covered many kilometers on foot and by local train, even during the scorching summer. Sometimes, even when eating, you had to compromise.

Regarding this, he said: “I started working when I was 17. Initially, I decided that I would either become an action director or a film director. Like other wrestlers, I too had to struggle during such a long journey. Like others, I had to roll a lot of papads to find work. I directed the first film, which didn’t do very well. Then Golmaal was created, which created history. I have made 16 films so far. Maybe if Covid hadn’t happened, we would have done more (laughs)…’

Early in his career, he also ironed stars’ clothes. Rohit started his career as an assistant director. His first winning was only Rs 35. However, even after that, Rohit did not stop struggling and working hard. He also had to do other small jobs, which he did. He did the work of pressing the actress’s sarees. Additionally, he also worked as a spotboy for a while.

Regarding this, he replied: “Yes, that’s true. See what happens is the assistant director has to do all the little tasks. The second is that at that time, the budget for a film was not very high. The unit was small. For this reason, each assistant had to do a lot of work. Not just me, many have done this kind of work.

In those days, no work was undervalued. All kinds of work, including ironing the actress’s sarees, were done.

Rohit got scared when his first film failed, luck turned with Golmaal and started his production house with films like ‘Dil Kya Kare’ and ‘Raju Chacha’. Rohit also joined Ajay and started working as an assistant director. ‘Raju Chacha’ was a big budget film, but the film did not perform well. Ajay Devgan suffered a lot because of this. Ajay and Rohit had to shut down the production house for two years. After returning all the loans, they made “Zameen” together.

Rohit made his directorial debut with the film Zameen in 2003. However, that film too didn’t do much. Due to the films’ continuous failures, many directors and actors started hesitating to work with Rohit.

Talking about it, Rohit said, “It’s only natural that when a film doesn’t do well, one feels bad. Then, while shooting another film, many questions arise in the mind. There is also a dilemma in mind whether a producer-actor will work with you or not. Self-doubt also remains.

After the release of the first film Zameen, work on the script continued for a year and a half and started working on the film Golmaal in 2005. Then this film released in 2006 changed my entire career.

Even though the idea of leaving the industry never entered my mind during this time, I still felt defeated. I was not established in the industry at the start of my career. For this reason, there was nothing to lose. My only aim was to connect people with low budget comedy films like Golmaal, All the Best.

Rohit became the first filmmaker in the Hindi film industry who invented the concept of a universe. Rohit is the first filmmaker in the Hindi film industry who invented the concept of universe in films. Even if he never planned this. He said: “I’ve never thought about that before. Until 2016, I didn’t have such thoughts in my mind. The idea of this only came to Singham, Singham Returns, but while shooting the film Simmba, the idea came that we could create something like a detective universe. We were lucky that our idea was successful.
