Today, the results of 171 seats are out. Counting is still underway for 25 seats. In addition, 29 seats will be distributed among all parties based on the final election results. NPP hopes to cross the 150 mark in Parliament. Voting for the parliamentary elections took place in Sri Lanka on Thursday, November 14.
The NPP also won in the Tamil province of Jaffna. Here, NPP won 3 seats out of 6. The NPP’s victory was a big blow to the mainstream Tamil parties.
It may take 1-2 days to see full results.
113 seats required for majority
There are 225 seats in the Parliament of Sri Lanka. The number of 113 is necessary for the majority. It is very important that President Dissanayake obtains a majority in these elections. President Dissanayake can only implement important government policies after obtaining approval from Parliament.
Currently, his party has only 3 MPs in Parliament. According to local media, Dissanayake could obtain an absolute majority in the elections.
The last parliamentary elections were held in Sri Lanka in August 2020. In such a situation, fresh elections were to be held next year, but after winning the presidential election in September this year, Anura Kumara Dissanayake dissolved the Parliament. After that, parliamentary elections were announced. The results of the elections held in 2020 were as follows:
Dissanayake promised to reduce the power of the interim president
According to the Sri Lankan Election Commission, 8,821 candidates tried their luck in the parliamentary elections. Voters directly elect 196 members of Parliament in 22 constituencies according to the proportional representation system. The remaining 29 seats are distributed according to proportional representation.
The party gets 29 seats based on the number of votes it gets in the elections. A voter can vote for 3 candidates based on priority.
According to Al Jazeera, President Dissanayake believes that the power of the country is largely held by the “interim president”. They entered the election with a promise to reduce that power, but they will need changes to the Constitution. For this, they need two thirds of the seats. Dissanayake appeals to the public to win as many seats.
The position of executive presidency in Sri Lanka first came into existence in 1978. Since then, it has been criticized, but after coming to power, no party has attempted to destroy its power.
Dissanayake promised to fight corruption and improve the agreement with the IMF under the Ranil Wickremesinghe era.
