World According to the Stroke Organization (WSO), every year, more than 1 crore 22 lakh people across the world suffer from a stroke for the first time. Among them, approximately 65,000,000 people die every year.
More than 10 million people worldwide suffer from a stroke at some point in their lives. Its risk increases with age. According to the WSO, the risk has increased so much at present that after the age of 25, one in four people is likely to suffer a stroke at some point in their life.
According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, stroke is the second leading cause of death in India after coronary heart disease. A death due to stroke is recorded every four minutes in the country. Every year, approximately 1 lakh 85 thousand strokes occur. This means that every 40 seconds, someone suffers a stroke in the country.
The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) figures are very worrying for India. According to GBD, stroke cases in India have increased by 51% in the 30 years since 1990.
That’s why today in “Sehatnama” we will talk about stroke. You will also learn that-
Why is stroke a medical emergency? What to do immediately in case of a stroke? How can it be avoided?
What is a stroke?
A stroke means that due to rupture or blockage of the arteries in our brain, the blood flow reaching the brain cells has stopped. Due to this, the supply of oxygen to the brain stops and brain cells begin to die. Its symptoms appear very quickly and without any warning.
According to neurologist Dr Balbir Singh Sodhi, the earlier the symptoms of a stroke are identified, the sooner the patient can get treatment and in the right direction. This also makes it easier to save the patient.
If the patient arrives at the hospital within 4 1/2 hours of the stroke, blood flow through their blocked arteries can be restored. This treatment is called thrombolysis. Therefore, act as soon as possible and take the patient to the hospital immediately.
How to recognize a stroke?
If a person has suffered a stroke, its first symptoms are visible on the face and the organs around the face. Because of this, part of the face may become numb and control over that part may be lost. There may be confusion and difficulty speaking. You may feel like your language is not under your control. Sudden blurred vision may occur in one or both eyes. Often, we start to feel dizzy and have difficulty walking.
The American Stroke Association has created a QUICK tip to identify this. See the graph:
New guidelines from the American Stroke Association may prevent strokes
Given the rapid increase in stroke cases each year, the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Stroke Association (ASA) have released updated guidelines. It explains how the risk of stroke can be reduced by taking preventative measures and lifestyle changes.
He says screening is the best way to avoid any deadly disease. To avoid stroke, blood pressure, cholesterol level, blood sugar level and obesity should be checked from time to time. By keeping them under control, the possible risk of stroke can be avoided. Apart from this, what other advice is given, see in the graphic:
Choose healthy foods and drinks
If you want to avoid a stroke, you need to eat a healthy, heart-friendly diet. This helps control blood pressure, cholesterol levels, diabetes and weight. Try to include as many vegetables, fruits and beans as possible in your diet. Lemon water and coconut water can be good options in drinks.
keep weight under control
Obesity is the leading risk factor for heart attacks and strokes. So keep your weight under control. To do this, adopt a healthy and balanced diet. Do physical activities and get 7 hours of quality sleep per day.
do regular physical activity
Not being physically active is also one of the main risk factors for stroke. Do light exercise for at least 45 minutes every day. This improves both cardiovascular health and brain health. Stress levels also decrease.
Do not consume alcohol and cigarettes
Smoking increases the risk of stroke. Drinking too much alcohol can quickly raise our blood pressure. If someone smokes cigarettes with alcohol, the risk of stroke increases significantly. Consumption of alcohol and cigarettes can lead to a “come bull gor me” type situation leading to a stroke.
Control medical conditions
If there is heart disease, control it by talking to the doctor. Any type of cardiovascular disease can be a major risk factor for stroke. It is better to keep it under control beforehand.
Continue to have your cholesterol levels checked
High cholesterol is a major risk factor for stroke. If cholesterol levels are already high and stress also increases, the risk of stroke also increases. Therefore, keep checking your cholesterol levels from time to time. Have a full body exam once a year.
keep blood pressure under control
High blood pressure is a major cause of heart attacks. If left uncontrolled, the risk of stroke can double, and sometimes even quadruple. If blood pressure is high, it is very important to monitor it and get treatment.
keep diabetes under control
If a person has diabetes, the risk of stroke increases. To do this, it is important to have your blood sugar levels checked regularly. To control it, doctors may advise taking certain medications. Apart from this, make necessary improvements in lifestyle and eating habits. Make sure you get 7 hours of sleep regularly.
Continue to take your medications on time
If you are receiving treatment for a lifestyle disease, heart disease, or other medical problem, continue taking medications regularly. This will keep the disease under control and also reduce the risk of stroke.
