The party had fielded him as its candidate, ignoring many big names, but he could not win. Former BJP MP Asha Nautiyal won the by-election. She had been an MP from the same seat in 2002 and 2007. Asha is the state president of Mahila Morcha.
Gujarat: BJP wins Congress stronghold, captures Vav Assembly seat for first time
