The wait for the Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) election results will end today, November 25. The counting of students’ votes began from November 24 at 8 am in colleges affiliated to Delhi University.

According to early trends, NSUI is leading on ABVP after two rounds of counting. NSUI’s Raunak Khatri got 2,471 votes, while ABVP’s Rishabh Chaudhary got 1,829 votes. For Vice President, Bhanu Pratap of ABVP got 1,366 votes and Yash Nadal of NSUI got 1,900 votes.

This election took place on September 27. The results of the election were to be declared the next day, i.e. September 28, but the Delhi High Court had banned the counting of votes due to the disorder that spread in Delhi due to the posters, banners, etc. candidates during the electoral campaign. . The High Court had ordered the University to carry out the counting of votes by November 26, provided it cleans up the mess.

The roads, walls and police stations of Delhi Metro were plastered with campaign posters. On September 27, votes were recorded in the DUSU elections for the election of all central committees, namely President, Vice President, Secretary and Joint Secretary. Earlier, during the election campaign, walls, police stations and metro stations were covered in various places in Delhi with posters and banners supporting the candidates. There was dirt everywhere. In 2017, a Delhi lawyer had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court regarding election violence during the students’ union elections and had also claimed that public property was damaged during the elections. Hearing the petition, Justice Manmohan said the results this time should not be announced until the university satisfies the court that all posters, hoardings and game cards have been removed from the colleges.

After this, Prof. Satyapal Singh submitted a status report before Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela of the High Court. It was reported that the election candidates cleaned all the places where dirt was spread during the election campaign.

Prof Satyapal Singh said a survey of many places was conducted on November 21 and 22. It was revealed that the dirt had not been cleaned everywhere. After this, Delhi University itself decided to clean house. On this basis, the Supreme Court allowed the counting of votes.

21 candidates were in the fray for 4 posts, the main fight was between ABVP and NSUI. This time, a total of 21 candidates were vying for 4 central positions (president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary). Of these, 8 candidates were in the running for the post of President, 5 for the post of Vice-President, 4 for the post of Joint Secretary and 4 for the post of Secretary.

1 lakh, 40,000 students from a total of 52 colleges affiliated to Delhi University had to vote for 4 central posts. A record vote of 42% took place on September 27. Voting was done everywhere through EVMs, while for the university union, voting was done through ballot papers. However, there was a record voting rate of 44.46% in 2018 and 42.8% in 2017.

The main rivalry in the Delhi University Students’ Union elections is between ABVP and NSUI.

There were 8 male and 4 female candidates for the central posts and a tough fight for the president’s post between Rishabh Choudhary of ABVP, Raunak Khatri of NSUI and Savvy Gupta of AISA. Rishabh Chaudhary is a resident of Sonipat, Haryana. He is a graduate of Shyam Lal College and a student of Buddhist studies. Meanwhile, Saavi Gupta studies law.

There was a fierce fight for the post of vice president between Bhanu Pratap Singh of ABVP, Yash Nandal of NSUI and Ayush Mondal of AISA. The ABVP has made Mitravinda Karanwal its candidate for the post of secretary. Karanwal is a student of History (Hons) at Lakshmibai College. Karanwal was competing against Namrata Jeff Meena of NSUI and Anamika of SFI. Anamika is currently studying a master’s degree in political science.

For the post of joint secretary, ABVP’s Aman Kapasia, a Hindi (Hons) graduate from PGDNV Evening College, was competing against NSUI’s Lokesh Chaudhary and SFI’s Sneha Agarwal.

ABVP candidates a course in PG, NSUI raised issues like transparency during admission

ABVP: Campaign for ‘one course, one fee structure’ for PG courses, allotment of college hostels from the centre, scholarships for SC, ST, OBC and EWS categories: The campaign included issues such as campus infrastructure and admission. and increasing student participation in decisions related to AISA and SFI colleges: privatization, change in attendance policy, women’s safety, and four-year colleges. Earlier, ABVP had won 3 central posts, NSUI 1 post. In the 2019 Delhi University students’ union elections, ABVP had won three out of four seats. Elections could not take place in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus, while elections were not scheduled for 2022 due to disruptions in the academic calendar.

After this, in the 2023 DUSU elections, ABVP won three seats (president, secretary, joint secretary). While NSUI had won the post of vice president. Tushar Dedha of ABVP had won the post of president. Tushar got 23 thousand 460 votes, while runner-up Hitesh Gulia (NSUI) got 20 thousand 345 votes. Abhi Dahiya of NSUI won the post of vice-president, Aparajita of ABVP won the post of secretary and Sachin Basla won the post of joint secretary. In the last 11 years, ABVP has won the president’s post 8 times, while NSUI has won it only 3 times. The last time NSUI won the president’s position was in 2017.
