From now on, graduating students will be able to complete their studies in more or less time. According to the University Grants Commission (UGC), higher education institutions can offer graduate students the opportunity to complete the normal 3 or 4 year course in 2 years or 5 years.
According to UGC Chairman M Jagadish Kumar, the UGC approved the SOP for Accelerated Study Program (ADP) and Expanded Study Program (EDP) in a meeting this week. The draft rules mentioned in the SOP will be made public and comments will be sought on the same.
The establishments will decide on admission to ADP and EDP
According to the SOP, educational institutions will form a committee that will assess the potential of students based on their applications at the end of the first and second semester. Only after this will the committee decide how many credits students must bring per semester. It will also recommend which program students should join, EDP or ADP.
According to the SOP, one can apply for ADP only up to the end of the second semester. By joining ADP, subjects will increase in the next semester and additional credits will be available for them. The committee will decide the minimum number of credits required to be earned each semester in the EDP degree program.
Although the examination and evaluation system remains the same as that of the standard study program, a note of the time taken to complete the diploma, more or less, will be written on the diploma. However, this diploma will also be recognized as a standard diploma while being used for academic or professional recruitment purposes.
Students can also take a break between their degrees
V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras, had suggested this policy of reducing or increasing the duration of studies. He said the higher education process should be as flexible as possible so that more young people can access education.
Keeping this need for flexibility in mind, the UGC has also offered students the opportunity to take a break between their degrees under the National Education Policy 2020. If a student wishes, he or she can take a break in the course and come back later to complete it.
On this subject, the UGC president had said that our job is to train students to think critically. We want to make them such that they can contribute to the development of the country.
He said the UGC had already provided several entry and exit options, so that weaker students could take breaks and complete the program as per their choice. Our goal is to make students more flexible and provide more opportunities.
