When legendary singer Udit Narayan dreamed of becoming a singer in his childhood, his father thought that a farmer’s son cannot become a singer. His father Harekrishna Jha wanted him to pursue agriculture or consider becoming a doctor and engineer. Udit Narayan’s mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi is a folk singer. He believed in his son that one day he would become a great singer.
Udit Narayan has sung 25,000 songs in 40 different languages. Even today, at 69 years old, we find the same freshness in his voice. Udit says my mother is 106 years old. Even today, she continues to sing at home. I always feel inspired after listening to his singing.
Today, Udit Narayan celebrates his 69th birthday. On this occasion, he had a special conversation with Indianewsget. Know what he said during the conversation, in his own words
I learned to sing by listening to songs on the radio
I used to listen to the songs of Lata Mangeshkar, Rafi Sahab and Kishore Kumar on the radio. At that time, radio was only available at the home of the village chief or a great man. I learned to sing by listening to songs on the radio remotely. My mother sang in the houses of the village. He alone inspired me to sing.
Father wanted to become a doctor or engineer
My father was very angry with my singing. He said that after your studies, you become a doctor and an engineer. You are the son of a farmer. It is not possible for a farmer’s son to go to Mumbai and become a singer. It is therefore useless to dream of this. Amateur singing is another thing, but where can you make a career from it?
Used to earn 4-5 rupees by singing at the fair.
I sang at small village fairs. My elder brother Digambar Jha carried me on his shoulder across the river to the fair. Earlier, I used to get 4-5 rupees. You could get a lot of happiness for that much money. He even sang during school holidays. I studied till 10th in Bihar, but I couldn’t figure out what to do in life.
Started with Nepal Radio
During that time, he went to sing at a minister’s house. He was very impressed after listening to the song. He said if you want to sing Maithili folk songs for Nepal Radio then I can recommend it to you. After that, I went to Kathmandu and joined radio. I also studied there in 12th grade.
I used to sing on the radio during the day. He studied in the evening and also sang songs while frequenting five-star hotels. From there I earned a little money, which was enough to live on. So 7-8 years passed there.
I couldn’t believe it when I got the opportunity with Rafi Sahab.
I came to Mumbai in 1978 and took classical music lessons from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here. I had classes in the evening. During the day, he would meet all the music directors in their studios. I got my first opportunity to sing with the legendary singer Mohammad Rafi Sahab in the film “Unnis-Bees”. For me, it was nothing short of a dream. I couldn’t believe that I would have the chance to sing with someone I had listened to since I was a child.
It’s a pleasure to sing with Lata Mangeshkar
After the movie “Unnis-Bees,” I wasn’t getting the songs I wanted. There were a lot of struggles between 1978 and 1988. During this time, I kept hearing 2-4 song lines in movies. After getting “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak”, there was no turning back.
The number of songs I have sung with Lata Mangeshkar during my career. I don’t think a singer of my generation would have sung so many songs. I have been fortunate to sing in many films like Darr, Dil To Pagal Hai, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Veer Zara. I consider this my chance.
It is said that a woman plays an important role in a man’s success. His wife Deepa Narayan made a huge contribution to Udit Narayan’s career. On Udit Narayan’s birthday, his wife and singer Deepa Narayan spoke to Indianewsget.
I was wondering what Udit ji would be able to sing?
I was a flight attendant. I also loved singing. I wanted to release a music album in Nepali. The music director introduced me to Udit ji. I didn’t know him until that moment. He was very thin. I thought he was so skinny, how would he be able to sing? But when she sang, I was surprised to hear her voice. It turned out to be a successful Nepali language album. After that, Nepalese people started recording albums with the voice of Aakar Udit ji and me.
I said one day I’ll keep it in my pocket
Udit ji had started loving me in his heart. One day people were looking at me while recording. I wondered why are you looking at me like that? One day he told me he would keep you in his pocket. I didn’t understand what you meant? Then he said I will keep you in my heart, I will love you. I thought if you’re a good person and a good singer, you should get married.
Udit ji left his job when it became stable.
I continued to work even after marriage. There is no guarantee of production success. I thought Udit ji should first become stable and then quit his job. When ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ became a hit and Udit ji’s car took off, I quit my job. Meanwhile, his son Aditya Narayan was born.
Udit ji often talked to me about quitting my job. The day was spent serving Aditya and his mother-in-law. Regardless, it was difficult to find time for this work. I still told Udit ji to first buy a good apartment and maintain a certain bank balance. After this I will quit my job.
Lived with 7 to 8 boys in one room
Before the wedding, I rented a small apartment in Kalina Santa Cruz. After marriage, Udit ji moved to the same apartment with me. When Udit ji arrived in Mumbai, he lived as a paying guest in a room in Mahalaxmi with 9-10 boys. During his struggle, he could have changed houses 7-8 times. Our life began in an apartment in Kalina. This is why we have not sold this apartment until today.
When he became a hero in Nepali cinema, he started getting offers in Hindi as well.
While Udit ji was struggling to sing, he got a chance to act in a Nepali film “Kusume Rumal”. In this film, I was offered the heroine and Udit ji was offered the hero. I didn’t act, but Udit ji did a film and that film became a super hit. However, Udit ji did not feel like taking action. It was me who encouraged him to act. Because at that time there was a great need for money.
After this, another Nepali film was made. In which he had a dual role. Later, I also started getting offers to act in Hindi films, but I felt that I should not board two boats. If Udit ji wants to become a singer then he should become one.
We were so busy that we didn’t get a chance to eat.
It is by the grace of God that Udit ji became very busy after the film ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’. At that time we were recording at least 8-10 songs a day. There were also many shows. Sometimes we didn’t even have time to eat. She fed him with her own hands, in the car itself. Even after achieving success, Udit ji is as humble as before. Everything I make with my own hands, I give away. Eat with lots of love. I also design their clothes.

Listening to my mother’s singing always inspires me.
The same freshness is visible in Udit Narayan’s singing over the last 41 years. He credits his mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi for this. Recently, in an interview, Udit Narayan had said, “My mother is 106 years old. Even today, she continues to sing at home. I am always inspired by listening to his singing. If she can sing at this age, why can’t I? This reflection inspires me to sing better.
