How to secure a credit card? What are the things to keep in mind when using a credit card?

Expert: Rahul Mishra, Cyber Security Advisor, Uttar Pradesh Police

Question: What is a credit card? Answer – The credit card is a payment card generally issued by the bank. It contains a fixed amount that the user can use to purchase any item. This amount must be repaid within a fixed period. Credit cards also have a spending limit, which is decided based on several parameters. It can also be increased or decreased.

According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), there were more than 10 million credit card users in India as of March 2024. Of these, 5 banks had 75% market share. This number is constantly increasing.

Question: Can money be transferred from a blocked credit card? Answer- Cyber security expert Rahul Mishra says that once the credit card is blocked, monetary transactions cannot be carried out through it. Often, after complaining to the bank, users get the impression that their card has been blocked, but for some reason it is not blocked. There is a risk of fraud as a result.

Question: What types of scams can occur via credit cards? Answer – The main reason for credit card scams is the theft of credit card number, Card Verification Value (CVV) and expiration date. If someone has these three details on your card, then they can defraud you.

For this, fraudsters can make online purchases with your credit card using any international gateway. International Gateway is an online payment method in which OTP is not required for payment. For this, only your credit card details are sufficient.

Understand this with an example – Suppose someone has a gateway from America and a credit card from India. In such a situation, only the card number, CVV and expiration date are enough to make purchases with this card. It does not require OTP of the mobile number linked to the credit card.

Question: What should I do to ensure credit card security? Answer: When you give your credit card to swipe it in a place like a shopping mall, petrol pump, the risk of card details being stolen increases. Scammers can sell these details outside India.

To avoid such fraud, memorize the three-digit CVV number of your credit card or write it down in your personal diary. Hide the CVV number on the credit card with a permanent marker.

With this, you will stay safe while giving credit card in places like shopping mall, gas pump. No one will be able to see your CVV number. The transaction will not be possible without CVV.

Apart from this, also keep in mind other things shown in the chart below.

Question – What should you do if you are a victim of credit card fraud? Answer – If a suspicious transaction has occurred on your credit card, report it to your bank immediately. Also block the card by calling the bank’s customer service number. Apart from this, also file a written complaint at the nearest police station.

Keep in mind that the sooner you file a complaint after the transaction, the sooner the money can be returned to you. Therefore, file a complaint immediately after deducting the money. Do not be careless in this matter.

Question: What precautions should be taken when using a credit card? Answer: While using a credit card, the cardholder should keep certain things in mind. Such as-

Once you get your credit card’s secret PIN, memorize it immediately. Next, destroy the document containing your secret PIN. Previously, there was only a magnetic strip on the back of the credit card. Now the chip is used. Smart cards are more secure. Therefore, if your card does not have a chip, get it upgraded from your bank. Check your credit card statement or transaction details once every 15 days. If there is an inconsistency in the transaction, file a complaint with the bank immediately.
