President Yoon Suk-yeol announced the imposition of martial law in South Korea on December 3.
South Korea’s ruling party has hinted it will remove President Yoon Suk-yeol. According to the AP news agency, People Power Party General Secretary Han Dong-hun said it was necessary to reduce the constitutional power of the president.
Dong-hun, head of the ruling People Power Party, said on Thursday:
I received reports that the President attempted to use the military to arrest several leaders during the imposition of martial law. My name was also there. He has become a threat to democracy. He should step down.
Dong-hun said it is extremely important to reduce the president’s power, otherwise he could take dangerous steps like imposing martial law again. This can pose a threat to the country and its citizens.
Previously, the ruling party had refused to impeach the president. Dong-hun said Thursday he would try to reject the impeachment motion. However, he had already declared the president’s decision to impose martial law unconstitutional. Today, his statement is seen as support for the president’s impeachment.

The president imposed martial law, which was lifted within 6 hours. President Yoon imposed martial law in South Korea on December 3. He accused the opposition party of collusion with North Korea and engaging in anti-national activities. Will the impeachment of the president be successful? The day after the application of martial law in South Korea, the opposition parties together began the process of impeaching the president. The opposition parties have a total of 192 deputies. In the 300-seat Korean Parliament, a two-thirds majority, or 200, is required for impeachment.
The People’s Party has 108 seats. Opposition parties only need 8 votes to impeach. Following the statement by ruling People’s Party General Secretary Dong-hun, it is believed that some opposition party leaders may support the president’s impeachment.
Han Dong-hun leads a minority faction within the ruling People’s Party. On the night of December 3, 18 deputies from his group as well as the opposition voted in favor of annulling the president’s decision to establish martial law. Now these deputies can also vote for impeachment.
Dong-hun was close to Chairman Yoon, the relationship deteriorated due to the fact that his wife was previously considered close to Chairman Yoon, as both had worked together as defenders for many years. Dong-hun previously served as Minister of Justice in President Yoon’s government, but after becoming general secretary of the People’s Party, their relationship deteriorated significantly.
Dong-hun is said to be very angry about the scandals involving the president’s wife. He believes this has had a negative impact on the party’s image.
The president’s wife has long been associated with controversies. In 2021, he was accused of lying on his professional records and cheating on his doctoral dissertation.
Why was martial law lifted in South Korea in just 6 hours? After President Yeol announced martial law, the entire opposition reached Parliament in a short time. There should be more than 150 MPs in Parliament to repeal martial law. By the time the army arrived to take Parliament, enough MPs had arrived in Parliament and debates had begun.
However, the army tried to stop the prosecution. Many opposition MPs who were going to vote in Parliament were arrested. I started breaking the windows of Parliament to get inside. But by the time the soldiers arrived inside, 190 of the National Assembly’s 300 deputies had voted against the president’s martial law proposal.
According to the South Korean Constitution, if the majority of parliamentarians demand the abolition of martial law in the country, then the government must accept it. Opposition leaders took advantage of this provision of the Constitution and the army had to cease its operations.
The army immediately evacuated Parliament and returned. There were helicopters above Parliament and military tanks deployed on the road, they had to turn back.
Why did President Yole have to impose martial law? The South Korean Parliament has a total of 300 seats. In the elections held earlier this year, public opinion gave a considerable mandate to the opposition party DPK. The ruling People’s Power won only 108 seats, while the opposition DPK party won 170 seats. Due to its majority, the DPK opposition interfered more in the functioning of the presidential government and was not able to work according to its agenda.
President Yole won the 2022 elections by a narrow margin. After that, his popularity began to decline. His image was also affected due to his wife’s involvement in many controversies. Currently, the President’s popularity is around 17%, which is the lowest among all presidents in the country. To deal with all this, the President imposed martial law.
