Why did President Yole have to impose martial law?
The South Korean Parliament has a total of 300 seats. In the elections held earlier this year, public opinion gave a considerable mandate to the opposition party DPK. The ruling People’s Power won only 108 seats, while the opposition DPK party won 170 seats. Due to its majority, the DPK opposition interfered more in the functioning of the presidential government and was not able to work according to its agenda.
President Yole won the 2022 elections by a narrow margin. After that, his popularity began to decline. His image has also been affected due to his wife’s involvement in many controversies. Currently, the President’s popularity is around 17%, which is the lowest among all presidents in the country.
To deal with all this, the President imposed martial law. He accused the DPK of sympathizing with North Korea and engaging in anti-national activities.
