What do we do if we have an illness? The answer is to go to the doctor, take medicine and get well. Now imagine what would happen if these medications became ineffective. The disease will progress, the body will weaken and diseases will take over and eventually death will occur.

This is what is currently happening in the world and which worries the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN. Yesterday, September 26, a high-level United Nations meeting was held to find a solution to the threat of antimicrobial resistance. It included representatives from every country in the world, civil society and international health organizations.

According to a study recently published in the world-renowned journal “The Lancet”, 3 million people could die in the next 25 years due to resistance to antibiotics and antimicrobials.

This question does not arise for the first time, but the important thing is that the crisis worsens over time. We have already talked about this in detail in two of our articles.

So today againIn the medical file“I will know why this resistance arises. Why do medications become ineffective? You will also learn that-

Who is responsible for this situation? What mistakes do people make? What is the responsibility of doctors and the health system? What precautions should people take?

Question: Why is the global health community so concerned about the “antibiotic resistance study” published in “The Lancet”?

answer: The World Health Organization (WHO) had expressed concern about superbugs some time ago. It has also been said that excessive use of antibiotics should be avoided, otherwise a time will come when the drugs will completely fail and have no effect on diseases.

Today, a study published in Lancet indicates that 3 million people could die in the next 25 years because of antimicrobial resistance. This means that many medications will become ineffective in the coming times. So this can be a major crisis.

Question: Why did it happen that medicines intended to cure diseases began to become ineffective?

answer: The rule of this world is that only this organism survives, which continues to strengthen itself by adapting to the new environment. The mosquitoes did the same. First I learned to fight with the smoke from the morgue. Then with poisonous incense sticks, then with a quick card. They have continued to increase their resistance and have now become very powerful.

Likewise, many pathogens have learned to resist antibiotics. Now the drugs have no effect on them. As a result, diseases for which these drugs previously produced an immediate effect are now proving ineffective due to pathogen resistance to antimicrobials. See in the graph why this happened.

Question: Why is antimicrobial resistance such a big threat?

answer: In the coming times, the number of these superbugs, i.e. pathogens against which all medications will be ineffective, will increase. In such a situation, it will be difficult for humans to cope with it. Many common illnesses will also begin to cause death. It is also possible that the dangerous situation imagined by scientists in the future will become even more dangerous.

Question: Who is responsible for this situation? People or doctors?

answer: Dr Vijay Saxena says both have a shared responsibility in this situation due to antimicrobial resistance. Governments and health systems around the world are also responsible.

The problem is that today every street is full of charlatans, who have no proper education or medical degree. Poverty is so great that the number of people who consult these doctors is also very high. This is the reason why antibiotics and antimicrobial drugs are administered in very large quantities and with very high effectiveness.

The healthcare system is so expensive that people buy their medicines directly from medical stores to avoid long expenses at the doctor’s office. The government and this system are responsible for both situations.

Question: What mistakes and negligence have been made by ordinary people?

answer: Most people consider not going to the hospital when they are sick to be a way to save money rather than being careless. They buy medicines themselves through Google or go to the medical store and consume them. The result of these small negligences is before us today.

Question: What is the role of pharmaceutical companies that manufacture drugs in this area?

answer: Dr. Vijay Saxena says that the biggest crisis in our country today is the lack of proper structure and system regarding companies that manufacture medicines. Medicines are manufactured in large quantities and quacks also prescribe them. Here too, it is very important to have strict rules and government vigilance.

The World Health Organization has advised doctors around the world to prescribe fewer medications and only prescribe antibiotics when absolutely necessary. In June this year, the ICMR also said that Indian doctors were writing wrong prescriptions to one in two patients and administering more drugs than necessary.

Question: The medical community is working alongside them to address this crisis. What precautions should ordinary people take?

answer: In case of mild cold and cough, instead of immediately going to the medical store for medicine, we should take a rest. Seasonal colds and coughs will heal on their own in 2 to 3 days. Never take antibiotics without a doctor’s advice.

Instead of relying on medications, focus on good health and strong immunity. A good, balanced diet and healthy lifestyle can be a better option.
