Due to the earthquake, the walls of many houses in Tibet cracked.
126 people died and 188 were injured in the earthquake that struck China’s Tibet province on Tuesday morning. According to the official Chinese news agency Xinhua, the epicenter of this earthquake, which occurred at 9:05 a.m. (6:30 a.m. Indian time), was 10 kilometers underground in Shijang, Tibet.
According to the Indian National Center for Seismology (NCS), its intensity was 7.1 on the Richter scale. The impact of the earthquake was also seen in Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim and Uttarakhand in India. At present, there is no news of loss of life or property in India.
The NCS reported that two more earthquakes struck the region shortly after the first quake. Local authorities are continually taking stock of the situation, which means that the number of victims continues to increase.
According to reports, more than 1,000 houses were damaged in Tibet due to the earthquake.
Residents’ vehicles were also badly damaged due to the collapsing walls.
As soon as the earthquake was heard, people started running towards open areas to save their lives.
Rescue workers are busy helping people in earthquake-affected areas.
Rescue workers took part in rescue operations alongside the Chinese army.
Level 3 emergency declared in affected area
According to reports, a large number of people are trapped under the rubble after the earthquake. They are rescued. According to Chinese CCTV news, the Chinese State Council sent a special team to the earthquake-hit area and declared a Level 3 emergency.
The Chinese Air Force is also engaged in rescue operations in the affected area. The region’s infrastructure was severely damaged by the earthquake, which disrupted electricity and water supplies. Due to the earthquake, China closed Mount Everest tourist areas to tourists.
Level 3 emergency is declared when the accident is so serious that the local administration and the state government cannot cope with it. In such situations, the central government sends immediate help.
Impact felt up to 400 km
According to media reports, local authorities are contacting the population of the region to assess the damage caused by the earthquake. The earthquake’s tremors were so strong that its impact was felt even in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, 400 km away.
Today’s earthquake is the most powerful earthquake recorded within a 200 kilometer radius in the last 5 years. Its center is located where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide. Due to the collision of these plates, high waves occur in the Himalayan mountains.
Why do earthquakes happen? The surface of our Earth is mainly made up of 7 large tectonic plates and many small tectonic plates. These plates continually float and sometimes collide with each other. Often, due to a collision, the corners of the plates bend and when there is too much pressure, these plates start to break. In such a situation, the energy released from below finds an outlet and after this disturbance, an earthquake occurs.
Understand from the graphs how dangerous an earthquake is, whatever its intensity…
467 years ago, 8.30 lakh people died in an earthquake in China. The deadliest earthquake occurred in China in 1556, in which 8.30 lakh people died. The most dangerous earthquake ever recorded in terms of intensity occurred in Chile on May 22, 1960. Its intensity on the Richter scale was 9.5.
The tsunami caused by this disaster caused terrible devastation in many countries, including southern Chile, the Hawaiian Islands, Japan, the Philippines, eastern New Zealand and southeastern Australia. 1,655 people died and 3,000 people were injured.
