India on Monday summoned Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner Nurul Islam over the India-Bangladesh border fencing dispute. Earlier on Sunday, Bangladesh had summoned the Indian high commissioner. The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry called Indian High Commissioner Prannoy Verma and termed the fencing carried out by BSF at the border as an illegal effort.

Bangladesh has alleged that India is trying to erect fences at five places on the border, in violation of the bilateral border agreement. Bangladesh’s government news agency BSS said the Indian high commissioner spoke with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Jashimuddin on the issue for about 45 minutes.

However, the caretaker government of Bangladesh has not issued any statement on the matter. The Indian high commissioner said after the meeting that the two countries had agreed to erect a barrier over the security issue. On Sunday, Bangladesh Home Affairs Advisor Jahangir Alam Choudhary said Bangladesh would not give any place to anyone on its border. He said no defense-related work would be allowed within 150 meters of the zero line at the border.

According to Jahangir Alam, according to the agreement “Bangladesh-India Joint Border Directive-1975” signed between Bangladesh and India, it is prohibited to carry out any type of work related to defense matters within 150 meters of the line zero from both countries. . For this, the consent of both countries is necessary.

There is a 4,156 km border between India and Bangladesh. Of this total, India has fenced 3,271 km of border, but this work is still underway on 885 km of border.

Controversy regarding the fence in 5 places

Jahangir Alam Chaudhary said that India had carried out fencing work at 160 places from 2010 to 2023. BSF took over this work from January 10 when conflicts broke out at 5 places. The dispute took place in Chapainwabganj, Teen Bigha Corridor in Lalmonirhat, Patnitala in Naugaon, Feni, Kushtia and Cumilla.

According to Alam, BSF stopped the fencing work following Bangladesh’s objection. BSF assured Bangladesh that it would stop the work of fencing with barbed wire.

India extends Sheikh Hasina’s visa

Amid the ongoing dispute between the two countries, India extended the visa period of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina 4 days ago.
