The distribution of National Sports Awards 2024 by the Sports Ministry continues at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Draupadi Murmu honors the winners. Murmu first honored Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
Double Olympic medal shooter Manu Bhakar, world chess champion D Gukesh, hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and para-athlete Praveen Kumar were honored with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
Apart from this, 5 coaches received the Dronacharya award, 2 of them for lifetime achievement. The Arjuna Award is given to 34 players, including 17 para-athletes, while 2 are for lifetime achievement.
Manu won a double medal at the Paris Olympic Games. Manu Bhaker had won a double Olympic medal at the Paris Olympics in August-September. She placed third in both individual and mixed doubles in the 10 meter air pistol. Based on its two medals, India won a total of 6 medals in the Paris Olympics.
Gukesh, 18, is the new world chess champion. He won the title at a young age. 18-year-old Indian grandmaster D Gukesh won the world chess champion title on December 11 in Singapore.
