Saif had come to Bhopal in 2020 following the death of his aunt Ashar Kidwai, a history professor at Saifiya College, claims that Saif had come to Bhopal in 2020 following the death of his aunt Saleha Sultan. Even before that, he continually came to Bhopal. Kidwai says that after the death of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi in 2011, Saif got the title of Bhopal Nawab.
Kidwai says that the title of Nawab has no meaning in a democracy but according to tradition, Saif was given the title of Nawab. Her turban ceremony was carried out according to procedure. He is now the main heir of the Nawab family.
Saif Ali Khan’s turban ceremony took place after the death of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. He got the title of Nawab.
How Saif became the Nawab of Bhopal Professor Kidwai says that Nawab Hamidullah had 3 daughters. The eldest was Abida, the second Sajida and the third Rabia. Abida Sultan left India in 1950 and took Pakistani citizenship. She was angry at her father Hamidullah’s actions. When her father Nawab Hamidullah Khan died in 1960, she was present in Bhopal.
Abida Sultan felt that if she wanted to renounce her Pakistani citizenship and settle down in Bhopal, she would become the Nawab of the royal family. Field Marshal Ayub Khan, the then President of Pakistan, also advised him to settle in Bhopal but he rejected the post of Bhopal Nawab.
The second daughter, Sajida, was married to Nawab Iftikar Ali Khan of Pataudi, Haryana. Iftikar’s son was Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Mansoor’s son is Saif Ali Khan. After the death of Nawab Hamidullah, Sajida Sultan’s husband Iftikhar Ali Khan became the Nawab of Pataudi Bhopal.

The Center considered the Nawab’s properties as enemy property. On February 25, 2015, the central government had ordered the finance ministry to confiscate the assets of the Pataudi family under the Enemy Property Act. Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s son Saif Ali Khan Pataudi challenged this order in the High Court.
It was stated in the petition that Abida Sultan, the eldest daughter of Nawab Hamidullah of Bhopal state, had gone to Pakistan. The then President had issued a notification in 1960 declaring Sajida Sultan, the second daughter of the Bhopal Nawab, heir to the property. Sajida’s son and cricketer Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi succeeded him.
At the same time, the central government claims that the legal heir of Nawab Hamidullah Khan is Abida Sultan, who has gone to Pakistan. Therefore, he has the right to confiscate their property under the Enemy Property Act.
In 2019, the court had accepted Saif’s grandmother Sajida Sultan as the legal heir of the Bhopal property.
Sharmila’s argument – Abida has gone to Pakistan, she has no rights over the property.
Sharmila Tagore argued before the court that Abida Sultan had gone to Pakistan after the partition of 1947 and the Bhopal Nawab had died in India, and therefore she had no right to Indian property on the basis of the sharia. After this, in 2019, the court ruled that Saif’s grandmother Sajida Sultan was the legal heir to the Bhopal property.
