As a mandate of CEC Gyaneh Kumar, from February 18, 2025 to January 26, 2029.
Dnyanesh Kumar, an IAS officer in 1988, held the post of 26th Chief Electoral Commissioner on Wednesday (CEC). They are the first CECs to be appointed under the new law. His mandate will remain until January 26, 2029. Earlier, Rajiv Kumar, who held the post of CEC, retired on February 18.
During the mandate of 4 years of Gyanesh Kumar, the elections will be held in 20 states and 1 a Union territory (Puducherry). He will start from Bihar and the final elections will be held in Mizoram.
In addition to Gyanesh Kumar, Vivek Joshi was appointed commissioner in the elections. He is the chief secretary of Haryana and an officer of the IAS of 1989. At the same time, the commissioner in the elections Sukhbir Singh Sandhu will continue in his post.
These appointments were approved at a meeting held on February 17 under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Minister of the Interior, Amit Shah, and the head of the opposition to Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also attended the meeting.
After taking over, CEC Gyanesh Kumar said the first step for the nation was to vote. Each citizen of India, who has finished the age of 18, must vote. According to the Constitution of India, the law on public representation and their rules, the electoral commission is still with voters and will always be with voters.
Rahul refused to consider the names, according to media reports, a list of 5 names for the new CEC has been given, but Rahul refused to consider the names.
After the meeting, Rahul Gandhi published a decent note. In this, he had said that the case was pending before the Supreme Court, so this meeting should not have been held.
At the same time, the congress said – we cannot work in the ego. The meeting was to be postponed so that the Supreme Court could decide soon.
Rahul wrote – The decision to appoint at midnight was written by Rahul Gandhi disrespectful on X- There was a meeting on the appointment of the next election commissioner (CEC). In this, I gave a note to the Prime Minister and the Minister of the Interior. It was written there – the fundamental thing is that the electoral commission is independent. There is no interference from the executive in the process of appointing the election commissioner and commissioners in the elections.
As head of the opposition in Lok Sabha, it is my responsibility to maintain the ideal of Babasaheb Ambedkar and leaders who build the country. The decision of the Prime Minister and the Minister of the Interior to appoint CEC at midnight is incompatible. The decision to appoint the CEC was taken when the case is at the Supreme Court and it must be heard within 48 hours.
The chief judge was withdrawn from the committee which appoints CEC. It is a violation of the ordinance of the Supreme Court. The Modi government has raised the concerns of voter crores on the honesty of our electoral process.
Singhvi said that head of congress and principal defender Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that the CEC selection committee was a violation of the Supreme Court decision. By removing the CJI of the Commission formed for the selection of the CEC, the government clearly indicated that it wished control, not the credibility of the electoral commission.
Singhvi said there was a request to the Supreme Court on the new law made for the appointment of the CEC and others. The case was heard on February 19. It was only 48 hours of housing. The government should have approached the Supreme Court for an early hearing of the petition.
There may be so many commissioners at the Electoral Commission, no number has been set in the Constitution concerning the number of commissioners in the elections. Article 324, paragraph 2, of the Constitution stipulates that the electoral commission may have the chief elections commissioner and other commissioners in the elections. It depends on the president how many will be their number. After independence, the electoral commission had only the chief election commissioner of the country.
On October 16, 1989, the government of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi appointed two other commissioners in the elections. This made the electoral commission a multi-member organization. These appointments were first made from the 9th general elections. At that time, it was said that this chief election commissioner had been made to cut the VR Perry Shastri.
On January 2, 1990, the Vice-President Singh government changed the rules and again made the electoral commission a member organization. On October 1, 1993, the PV Narasimha Rao government again approved the appointment of two other commissioners in the ordinance. Since then, the Electoral Commission has had two commissioners in the election commissioner in the elections.
