India News Get -CareerOpenAI researcher Suchir Balaji commits suicide behind story that explains major problem with AI
I believed that AI could be used to solve difficult problems, such as treating diseases and preventing aging. I thought we could create a scientist who would help solve these problems. Then when lawsuits started being filed against AI companies, I started to worry.
This was stated by Suchir Balaji, a researcher at artificial intelligence (AI) company OpenAI. On November 26, Suchir, a 26-year-old Indian-American, died. He was found dead in his apartment.
Suchir allegations added to OpenAI lawsuit 1 day before death
This question was debated on December 14. Police found no evidence of foul play during the initial investigation. Police suspect Suchir, a 26-year-old Indian-American, committed suicide.
Suchir first came into the spotlight when he expressed concern over the misuse of AI and its protected content. He also spoke about violation of ethical rules in OpenAI. While he himself was one of the creators of OpenAI. Suchir had accused OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, of violating the policies.
Suchir’s name was included in a lawsuit filed against OpenAI on November 26, a day before his body was discovered. According to media reports, OpenAI then agreed to review Suchir’s filing in which he had expressed copyright concerns.
Suchir Balaji
Suchir wanted to cure diseases and prevent old age using AI.
A startup called DeepMind had created AI software that could play games like Space Invaders, Breakout, and Pong on its own. News of this startup sparked Suchir’s interest in AI. Suchir wanted to solve people’s problems through AI.
Speaking to the New York Times, he said: “I thought we could make AI a scientist that could help cure disease and prevent aging. »
At that time, Suchir was a computer science student at the University of California, Berkeley. He began developing a mathematical system called Neural Network. He wanted to make it a network capable of acquiring certain skills by analyzing a lot of data.
In simple language, Suchir was trying to create software into which data could be fed on how to solve different problems. After that, the software can learn the skills to solve these problems on its own. In general, all the AI tools we have access to today do the same thing. For example, AI learned from us how to write good stories in English on any topic. The AI is still learning to work in Hindi.
Suchir Balaji joins OpenAI and played an important role in the creation of ChatGPT
Elon Musk and Sam Altman created OpenAI in 2015. Its headquarters is in San Francisco, United States. It is an artificial intelligence (AI) research company that creates AI tools and services like ChatGPT.

Musk resigned from the company’s board in 2018. Musk had also sued OpenAI and several others at the company, including Altman. He accused OpenAI’s owners of violating contractual agreements.
Suchir leaves his position at OpenAI in August 2024
Suddenly, in August 2024, Suchir decided to leave OpenAI. Upon leaving his job, he said the technology he helped develop was doing more harm than good.
He said,
If you think like me, you should leave the company too.
In Musk’s lawsuit, it was also stated that Altman and Greg Brockman approached Musk about creating a non-profit open source company. This company would develop Artificial Intelligence technology for the benefit of humans. However, due to OpenAI’s focus on making profits, the deal between Musk and OpenAI fell through.
What concerns did Suchir express about leaving OpenAI?
Suchir had been working with OpenAI for 4 years. Upon leaving his post, Suchir expressed three main concerns:
1. Other companies, including OpenAI, have illegally used the copyrighted data of computer programmers, artists, writers, and news organizations to train their chatbots and AI tools.
2. ChatGPT and other AI chatbot tools can pose a threat to content creators, businesses and internet services. While the AI underwent training using the data created by it.
3. AI technologies replace existing Internet services. While AI tools often provide erroneous and fabricated information. The internet is getting worse because of this.
Speaking to the New York Times, he said systems like GPT-4 make a complete copy of the data they are trained from. Once all the data is copied into the software, companies like OpenAI can train the system to produce either a copy of the same data or an entirely new output.
He said: “The reality is that between collecting data and producing results, companies are training AI to do something different. The output produced by the AI is not an exact copy of the input, it is not even completely new output.
Since then, Suchir has been talking about the dangers of ChatGPT on his X account and blog. In an article on X in October 2024, Suchir said:
Initially, I didn’t know much about copyright, fair use of internet content, etc. This concerned me even more when lawsuits started being filed against AI companies.

Suchir’s claims were refuted by OpenAI
OpenAI said in a statement: “We build our AI models legally, using publicly available data, under fair use and fair rules. Our philosophy is fair to creators, important to innovators and America. It is important for competitiveness.
What is “fair use,” which Suchir calls a false defense of AI companies?
Using someone’s content voluntarily or by legally purchasing their rights is called fair use. Suchir had said something very interesting to consider regarding this fair use. Something has been said that is extremely worrying for content creators, newspapers, news sites, writers and artists. He said,
Saying that there is fair use in AI models amounts to a defense that cannot be trusted. Because the data that AI is trained on, it can use that data to create a product that can compete with that data.
It is such a thing that AI steals AR Rahman’s music and creates similar and even better music. Then when AR Rahman removes the copyright from it, it should be said that this is the music created by our AI.
If content creators, newspapers, news sites, writers and artists also apply this example to themselves, then they will understand how justified Suchir’s concerns were.
Suchir denounced the alleged fair use of AI models on his blog.
