Dr V Narayanan is going to become the new chairman of ISRO i.e. Indian Space Research Organization. From January 14, he will replace the current ISRO chief S Somnath.

Narayanan will remain in this position for 2 years and is currently the Director of the Liquid Propulsion System Center (LPSC) located at Valiyamala. He has 40 years of experience. He is an expert in rocket and spacecraft operations.

V Narayanan was born in Melakattuvilai village of Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. His father C. Vanniaperumal was a poor farmer and his mother S. Thangammal looked after the house.

Besides his parents, he had three brothers and two sisters in his family. All these siblings were studying in the nearby Tamil medium school. Narayanan studied without electricity until 8th class. He got electricity connection in his house for the first time in 9th class and perhaps that’s why he dominated the entire school in 10th class.

Studied at IIT Kharagpur

After his graduation, Narayanan worked for one and a half years at TI Diamond Chain Limited, Madras Rubber Factory, BHEL, Trichy & BHEL and Ranipet. He joined ISRO in 1984.

After joining ISRO, Narayanan first worked on solid propulsion at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center. In 1989, he started working at LPSC, the Liquid Propulsion System Center. He then worked on cryogenic propulsion.

Narayanan did his M.Tech from IIT Kharagpur in 1989. During this time, cryogenic engineering was his subject and he also secured first rank. After that, he completed a doctorate in aerospace engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 2001.
