Talk cinematography in the new episode of Reel to Real. Many actors show great interest in cinema. They pay special attention to camera angle, focus and lighting.
We talk about the work of actors and directors in films. However, we hardly remember one person who works the hardest behind the scenes. We’re talking about cinematographer. This is where the work of converting the story into a moving film takes place.
It is not easy to shoot an entire film with heavy camera handling, visualization of scenes and understanding of the director’s vision. In a way, you can call him an artist behind the camera. The cinematographer is also called DOP (director of photography).
Talk cinematography in the new episode of Reel to Real. For this, we spoke to famous filmmakers Aseem Bajaj and Kabir Lal. Both of them also revealed interesting stories related to filmmaking.
He said that many films show great interest in cinema. They pay special attention to camera angle, focus and lighting. Akshay Kumar is one actor who doesn’t like to shoot at night. He films all his sequences in broad daylight.
Veteran actor Dharmendra pays special attention to lighting. If the lighting on set goes a little wrong, they start yelling at the cinematographer.
Sometimes night sequences have to be shot during the day. Many actors don’t shoot at night. In such a situation, even night sequences have to be shot in daylight. Here the role of the cinematographer increases. Here the scene is shot in such a way that no clouds or sky are visible. This reduces the light and dark characters that begin to appear on the screen. However, the work does not stop even after filming. The night filter is also applied to the scene during post-production. Only then is the scene over.
Shooting a film is not a big deal, the director of photography must have knowledge of literature. According to Aseem Bajaj, a filmmaker should have more artistic knowledge than technical knowledge. Anyone can handle a camera. Shooting movies, taking photos or making videos is also not a big problem. The cinematographer should read literature books. Only if he has knowledge of art and literature will he be able to understand the director’s vision.
What is the difference between cinematographer and camera operator? The person who operates heavy cameras during filming is called a camera operator. He moves the camera depending on the scene. His job is simply to capture the event live. The cinematographer sits on the sidelines and observes the focus, lighting, framing and movement of the actors. He teaches the cameraman how to use it.
A photography director team is made up of 7 to 8 people. It consists of the chief cameraman, the focus puller and the assistant cameraman. However, this number may increase depending on the size of the film.
Now who is this focus puller? Another cameraman stands alongside the cinematographer, called the focus puller. He remains focused on the object all the time. How far the object is, how far it moves, it calculates every centimeter. If the viewer’s attention wanders even a little here and there, the scene can be ruined.
Lighting plays the biggest role in cinematography, Dharmendra leaves the set when the lighting is bad. Lighting plays an important role in cinema. The lighting is done before the film begins, so that the scene appears clearly on the curtain or screen. Veteran actor Dharmendra focuses a lot on lighting. If his face appears even a little dark on screen, he starts yelling at the cinematographer. They stop filming, or even leave the set.
Dharmendra has worked in over 300 films in his career.
There was a demand for Ajay Devgan in the film Runway-34. There was a courtroom scene in the movie. He said that he did not want any kind of disturbance during the filming. It was for this reason that Aseem Bajaj had started lighting this room three days ago. A total of 13 cameras were used to film this particular sequence. It took three days to turn on the 13 cameras.
Obviously, the lighting on the day of filming irritates the actors. Besides, their time is also wasted. For this reason, the cinematographer or cinematographer performs pre-lighting on the set beforehand.
When there was no monitor, the scene had to be redone if a mistake was made. Previously, there was no monitor. It all depended on the cinematographer. Once this was filmed, it could not be verified. Only the editing table made it possible to know whether or not there was an error in the scene. So, during filming, if the cinematographer felt the shot wasn’t perfect, he would reshoot the scene.
Amitabh Bachchan never looks at the monitor, he trusts the work of the cinematographer Asim Bajaj worked as a cinematographer with Amitabh Bachchan and international star Ben Kingsley in the film Teen Patti. Narrating the story of the shooting, he said, “There is not even a single percent of pride or ego in Bachchan Saheb and Sir Ben Kingsley. He didn’t even look at the monitor after filming was over. He had confidence in the filmmaker’s work.
Filmmakers even risk their lives during filming Cinematographer Kabir Lal said, “The shooting of Sunny Deol’s film Hero took place in a snowy region of Europe. I was the cinematographer on this film. I had to get up high and take some photos. The ground temperature at that time was -10 degrees Celsius.
After reaching altitude, the temperature became -30 degrees Celsius. I was sitting in the helicopter and taking photos with the camera in hand. Little by little, my hands and legs began to freeze. I didn’t even wear winter clothes. It felt like my life was going to be lost. It was the most dangerous shoot for me.
Taal film was shot in real rain, cinematographer got irritated with Subhash Ghai Kabir Lal has worked as a cinematographer in veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai’s films. While sharing the story of shooting for Subhash Ghai’s hit film Taal, he said, “Subhash ji said that we will shoot this film in real rain and storm.”
We went to Khandala, the hilly region adjacent to Mumbai. I used to stand there all day and wait for the rain. Then we shot all the shots when it was raining. There were many problems during filming. I thought for a moment why I didn’t stop Subhash Ghai ji from doing that. I also felt very irritated. However, after the film came out, I understood his point. The film became a super hit. The cinematography of this film was highly praised.
An accident was almost avoided during the filming of Kaho Na Pyaar. An accident was narrowly avoided during the filming of the film Kaho Na Pyaar. Kabir Lal said, “There is a scene in Kaho Na Pyaar, where Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel get stuck on an island. It took 30 days to film this shot. For this, the film team went to Bangkok.
Five of us, including the film’s director Rakesh Roshan and star Hrithik-Ameesha, used to travel to an island by boat every day and then shoot there. One day, when we were going to do a shoot, terrible waves started to rise. There was a possibility of a cyclone. Be grateful that the person driving the boat was smart. He immediately turned the engine to the other side, otherwise we all could have lost our lives.
