Shubhrajyoti Barat had worked with actor Ali Fazal in the series Mirzapur.
Famous gangster Rati Shankar Shukla seen in the web series Mirzapur released in 2018. He kills people if he does not know the alphabet K, B, G. This character, seen in only 4 to 5 episodes, is still remembered. Jokes (memes) are made on social media based on his dialogues.
Maybe this character won people’s hearts because the artist who played him was special. The name of the person who plays this character is Shubhrajyoti Barat.
Although he is known to Mirzapur and this year’s topper Tribhuvan Mishra CA, that doesn’t mean he is a new actor. He has been doing theater since 1993. There was no intention of appearing in films or web shows. Even a film like Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya stood at his doorstep, but he didn’t even consider it necessary to talk about it.
When he realized he was short of money and not being recognized as a result, he turned to industry.
Shubhrajyoti worked with Ayushmann Khurrana in the film Article 15.
Born in Calcutta, but lived in Banaras I was born in Calcutta, but never lived there. My father worked there. We were three brothers and sisters. My uncle took me to Banaras. There is a Bengali Tola near Pandey Haveli in Banaras. My house was there. I say this because we sold this house. I studied there at the famous St. John’s School. Even the smell of cow dung on the streets of Banaras seems fragrant to me. I cannot live, but I want to die in Banaras.
I arrived in Mumbai after the 10th, forced to do engineering at the insistence of my parents. Meanwhile, my father was transferred to Mumbai. After the 10th, I came to Bombay (Mumbai) to join my father. I studied intermediate in Bombay. After that, I did engineering. I’m still looking for the reason why I did engineering. Maybe I should have chosen arts over sciences. I really wanted to get into the arts, but my parents’ ambitions took precedence over my wishes. They wondered who would give me a job after I took up the arts.
I became interested in theater after 12th grade. Between class 12 and taking admission in engineering, I took up acting. To understand theater art, I started reading books related to it. Then joined the theater of Nadira Babbar ji (the first wife of Raj Babbar). Now my mind remained focused only there. When I did theater, etc., I was congratulated. For the first time in my life, I was congratulated. I was very happy.
Back after going to Ram Gopal Varma’s office, I never saw myself as an actor. I thought theater was my world. I was happy to do theater. One day, famous writer-director Neeraj Vora gave me Ram Gopal Varma’s address. He said that Ramu was making a film and was looking for the lead role in it. You meet him for this role. I left the house for Ram Gopal Varma ji’s office. He arrived at his desk, stood for a while and returned.
I didn’t get “Satya” due to lack of self-confidence. I wondered why a director like Ram Gopal Varma would cast me as the main protagonist in his film? Neither my face nor my character. All these emotions were popping up in my mind. I came back. You won’t believe this, but the film Ramu ji was looking for an actor for was Satya.
Now you might think that I have dismissed a director like Ram Gopal Varma and a film like Satya, but that is not the case. I didn’t have confidence in myself and I wasn’t capable of playing this role.
I have doubts about myself. I can’t do anything even if I want to because it’s become part of my personality. Otherwise, I know very well that doing theater does not support the family. After a certain age, when children grow up, they also have desires that must be fulfilled.
When there were financial problems, the wife also often interrupted. Even if he never said why he did theater. She only talked about financial problems. To tell the truth, I was addicted to the theater, like one is addicted to alcohol. Even an alcoholic knows how harmful drinking is. I also felt like I wasn’t making any money doing theater, and yet I continued to do it.
Shubhrajyoti would stay up all night doing dubbing for money. At first, he also played small roles in series. He said: I got the chance to work in a TV series thanks to someone. During this time, I also started dubbing Hindi serials into Bengali. I used to make less money for each episode, but I would stay up all night dubbing many episodes. We could make a decent income from it.
Got a role in Emraan Hashmi’s film, but could barely act. In 2013, Shubhrajyoti played a small role in Emraan Hashmi-Vidya Balan’s film Ghanchakkar. There were a total of three nights of filming. However, these three nights were difficult for Shubhrajyoti. He said: I acted there as newcomers do. I wasn’t able to act.
I came home and wondered, have I been acting for 20 years, but I’m not able to get a small role according to the rules? Then the director of the film, Rajkumar Gupta, explained to me that you have to take your time and shoot at your leisure. Later, I realized that I still didn’t take acting seriously.
Mirzapur’s fortunes changed after doing theater for 25 years. After working in the first season of the serial Mirzapur, Shubhrajyoti became known to the general public. Casting director Abhishek Banerjee had called him and asked him to audition.
Appeared in only 5 episodes in the first season, but rose to fame in the character of Rati Shankar Shukla. Even today, most people only know him as Rati Shankar Shukla.
His famous dialogue in the series – “Join us”, we were making you an “offer”, still remains a meme.
Talking about her character, Shubhrajyoti said, “I was able to play the character of Rati Shankar Shukla better because my roots are linked to Banaras. I understand the language and body language of the people of Purvanchal.
After Mirzapur, she got a new identity of CA Topper. After Mirzapur, Shubhrajyoti also gained popularity in the web series Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper, which released this year. Actually, this show was written by Puneet Krishna. Puneet Krishna also wrote Mirzapur. Puneet Krishna really liked Shubhrajyoti’s work in Mirzapur. He had approached Shubhrajyoti a year before the shooting of Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper.
Shubhrajyoti cried remembering her father. At the end of the interview, Shubhrajyoti became a little emotional. In fact, we asked him if he had any ambitions or difficulties in his life? In response, he said: “My father passed away in 2015. If he had lived where I am today, I would have been very happy. I too would have been very happy to see him.
I have no ambition. Just let me have a good role. To be able to take two steps forward from where I am. I continue to earn money so that I can live my life with respect.
