NASA has released video of a volcano erupting from Jupiter’s moon Io.

The American space agency NASA has released a video of the volcanic eruption on IO, the third largest moon of Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system. This video was recorded by NASA from its Juno mission spacecraft. The video was published by the space agency on social networks.

In this video, we see lava coming out of the surface of the moon IO. IO is considered the most active volcanic moon in our solar system. There are more than 400 active volcanoes on its surface, in which eruptions continually occur and lava comes out.

Research by NASA’s Juno mission has helped unravel the 44-year-old mystery of volcanic activity on IO. The first photo of a volcanic eruption on Io was taken in 1979. There are many ponds here in which molten lava is present.

Scientist Galileo Galilei first discovered the moon IO.

How powerful is Io?

The volcanic lava erupting on Jupiter’s moon IO comes from magma chambers rather than magma oceans. According to Nature.com, its shape keeps changing due to volcanic eruptions on its surface.

IO was first discovered by scientist Galileo Galilei in 1610. However, the volcano was discovered active in 1979 by scientist Linda A. Morabito had imposed it.

Scott Bolton, chief investigator of the Juno mission, said that since Linda’s discovery, scientists have been curious about how lava comes out of IO’s surface.

Scientist Linda A. Morabito was the first to detect movement on the moon Io.

How was the IO inspected?

The first image of lava flowing from a volcano on the moon Io was taken by NASA’s Voyager 1 space probe in 1979. The moon IO orbits Jupiter in an elliptical orbit. Jupiter’s gravity puts pressure on it, causing it to shrink.

Due to shrinkage, heat increases inside and pressure on the inner layers increases, resulting in the formation of lava due to the melting of rocks inside. This lava erupts on the surface in the form of a volcano.

In 2023-2024, NASA’s Juno mission collected precise gravity-related data using the Doppler method. This revealed that magma on IO exists in chambers rather than the ocean.
