The BEST bus crushed many people in Kurla, Mumbai, on Monday evening. So far, 7 people have died in the accident. 49 injured are currently being treated. They were admitted to Zion and Kurla Bhabha.

The accident took place at Ambedkar Nagar on Kurla West Railway Station Road. The bus was going from Kurla station to Andheri. These BEST buses are operated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

It is learned that the accused driver, Sanjay More, was driving the bus for the first time on Monday. He had joined BEST as a contractual driver on December 1 itself. It is believed he had pressed the accelerator rather than the brake. That’s why this accident happened.

Police arrested the accused driver. He had been in police custody since late at night.

Eyewitnesses said the bus was waving before hitting Eyewitness Zaid Ahmed, who was present at the time of the accident, said he was leaving his house to go to the railway station. He saw that the bus was rocking rapidly. Zaid ran there and saw that a BEST bus had hit several vehicles, including pedestrians, an autorickshaw and three cars.

He also saw dead bodies. After this, he rescued the passengers traveling in the autorickshaw and took them to Bhabha Hospital. His friends also helped rescue the injured.

The bus is three months old, BMC had taken it on rent. Another Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) official said the bus was a 12-metre-long electric bus manufactured by Olectra and BEST had taken it on wet lease. He informed that the drivers of these buses are provided by private operators. An RTO official said the bus was only three months old. It was registered in the name of a company called EVEY Trans on August 20 this year.
