The Tamil Nadu government reshuffled its cabinet on Saturday. CM MK Stalin appointed his son and Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin as Deputy CM. Udhayanidhi made headlines last year for his statement on Sanatan Dharma. He had compared Sanatan Dharma to dengue malaria.

CM Stalin also made way for V Senthil Balaji in the cabinet. Balaji was granted bail by the Supreme Court on September 26 in the money laundering case. Balaji had resigned in February this year, 8 months after his arrest in connection with a cash-for-job scam.

Raj Bhavan has learned that CM Stalin had recommended Governor RN Ravi to appoint Udhayanidhi as deputy CM and expand the cabinet. The governor approved it. The swearing-in ceremony will take place on Sunday at Raj Bhavan at 3:30 p.m.

This will be the second time in Tamil Nadu, where the father will be CM and the son will hold the post of Deputy CM. Earlier in 2009-2011, current CM MK Stalin was the deputy CM. His father, Mr. Karunanidhi, was the chief minister then.

Besides vice CM, Udhayanidhi has been given charge of one more department. Udhayanidhi Stalin was given responsibility for the Ministry of Planning and Development in addition to his existing portfolio of youth welfare and sports development. It is not yet clear which ministry will be entrusted to Balaji.

ED had arrested Balaji on June 14, 2023. At that time, he was the Power Minister in the state government. Apart from this, it also had the Excise and Prohibition Department. He remained in prison for 15 months. On September 27, the Supreme Court granted bail to Balaji in the money laundering case.

Three ministers were dismissed, ministers of many departments were replaced in the new cabinet. Dr Govi ​​​​Chezhian, R Rajendran and SM Nassar were also included. Three ministers, including Mano Thangaraj, who held the dairy development department, were removed from their posts. R manages the backward classes welfare department. S. Rajakannappan was appointed as the Minister of Milk and Dairy Development and Khadi.

Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister Dr. K. Ponmudi has been appointed as the Forest Minister. Environment Minister Shiva V. Meyyanathan has been appointed as the Minister for Backward Classes. Dr. M. Mathiventhan who looked after the Ministry of Forests. He has now been posted to the Adi Dravidian Welfare Department. Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu has been given the additional portfolio of Environment and Climate Change.

Preparation to make Udhayanidhi his successor, grandfather was also CM

Before taking oath, Udhayanidhi paid homage to his grandfather and former chief minister Karunanidhi at the Karunanidhi memorial in Chennai.

DMK workers are said to have been demanding to increase Udhayanidhi’s stature in the party. He was also asked to give him a promotion within the government, so that the party could benefit from the 2026 legislative elections.

DMK leaders say efforts are on to present Udhayanidhi as his father’s successor at the helm of the party and government after the upcoming assembly elections. If this happens, he will be the third member of the family to head the government after father M K Stalin and grandfather M Karunanidhi.

Udhayanidhi became Deputy CM from MLA in 4 years of political career. Udhayanidhi’s political journey so far has been easy compared to that of his father, MP Stalin. Udhayanidhi first became an MP in 2021 at the age of 44. During his political career of 4 years, he became deputy CM to MLA. He is also the head of the youth wing of the DMK.

Before entering politics in 2021, Udhayanidhi had made his mark in Tamil films as a producer and actor. He has directed many Tamil films with stars like South superstar Kamal Haasan and Vijay. He has played lead roles in many Tamil films including the hit film Oru Kal Oru Kannadi.

Current CM MK Stalin’s political career began during his teenage years. He campaigned for his uncle Murasoli Maran in the 1967 elections at the age of 14. 29 years later, in 1996, Stalin became the mayor of Chennai. He then served as the first Deputy CM of Tamil Nadu from 2009 to 2011. Then his father M Karunanidhi was the CM of the state.

Narayanan Tirupati said, “It is the prerogative of the chief minister to appoint ministers or deputy chief ministers. However, Udhayanidhi Stalin was not mature enough to become a minister. A person who says he will destroy Sanatan Dharma becomes a minister. I didn’t even apologize for that. So how can he become Deputy CM?

Udhayanidhi has also repeatedly made statements against the Hindi language. He held PM Modi responsible for the deaths of Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley. He had said that both of them died due to torture inflicted by Prime Minister Modi.
