Sitting for hours in a restaurant deciding on the menu, not being able to choose a dress while shopping for clothes, always being in a state of confusion regarding one’s career, being dependent on others for major and minor decisions in life. It is normal for this to happen sometimes. But if this condition occurs more than 50% of the time and in a greater number of cases, it may also be due to “dicidophobia.”
Being confused in making decisions in all situations, getting nervous when someone asks you to make a decision or leaving your decisions to others, if this is your case, it could be “dicidophobia”.
This is a type of phobia in which people begin to feel nervous or anxious just thinking about making decisions. Because of this fear, people’s thinking can become fuzzy and they become more dependent on others to make decisions.
In a 2010 study of more than 10,000 American adolescents and published in the National Library of Medicine, 19.3% of adolescents were victims of “decidophobia”.
so today relationship I will talk about decidophobia. What is happening and why is it happening? Also, what should be done to overcome this.
What is discidophobia and its symptoms
Discidophobia is a mental health problem. In this, the person may have difficulty making decisions. Harvard professor and philosopher Dr. Walter Kaufman first used the term “desideophobia” in his 1973 book “Without Guilt or Justice: From Desideophobia to Autonomy.”
According to the scientific definition, in case of discoidophobia, such symptoms can be observed:
A person suffering from “decidophobia” is afraid of making decisions. Often she is unable to make even a minor decision. Sufferers may experience a panic attack at the critical moment of making a decision. Symptoms such as feeling hot, nervousness, increased blood pressure may also be observed. Apart from this, other symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, nausea, sweating, tremor, and chest or stomach pain may also be observed.
Why can’t we make decisions at the right time
Psychologist Dr Zafar Khan says that a person suffering from phobia lacks self-confidence due to fear, which affects their thinking ability. As a result, he has difficulty making decisions.
Apart from this, a person suffering from phobia may also have other problems, such as:
More negative thoughts come to his mind about anything, because of which he is afraid to make even small decisions. There may have been a time in your life when others took responsibility for making decisions for you. This prevents you from learning how to make decisions. Another possibility is that you have made decisions in the past that turned out to be bad and thought, “I always make bad decisions.” For this reason, you may not be able to make a decision. There can be many reasons for this, such as you don’t have the confidence to make decisions yourself or there is a deep-seated fear in your mind.
How to overcome decidophobia
Discidophobia can be overcome. All you need is to make changes in yourself. As per the suggestion of psychologist Dr. Zafar Khan-
Have confidence in your decision-making ability. Gather enough information before making a decision, then understand what will be best for you. To increase your decision-making ability, start by making small decisions and gradually move to larger decisions. You can reduce stress through meditation and yoga. It can also help those who are more nervous. Acquiring new experiences increases their ability to make decisions. So don’t be afraid to make decisions.
