India lost by 6 wickets in the Sydney Test. This photo is from the same match.

The ICC has given a ‘satisfactory’ rating to the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) pitch used for the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). The final match of the five-match series between India and Australia was played in Sydney. In this, India lost by 6 wickets. The remaining four BGT venues – Perth’s Optus Stadium, Adelaide Oval, Brisbane’s Gabba and Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) received ‘very good’ ratings.

Gavaskar had criticized the Sydney pitch. The Sydney Test was completed before the third day’s T-break, in two and a half days. In this, 11 wickets fell on the first day, 15 on the second day and 8 wickets on the third day. Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar had heavily criticized the Sydney pitch during commentary and said that if the match in India ends in 3 days, then there would be a lot of chaos.

He said after the match, it is not an ideal test match ground as you want it to be because you want the match to continue till the fourth and fifth day. If 15 wickets had fallen in India (in one day), there would have been a lot of drama.

ICC Pitching Rules: ICC has divided its pitching evaluation system into four categories. This includes the criteria very good, satisfactory, unsatisfactory and unsuitable. As part of ICC’s ‘Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process’, the pitch and outfield are monitored during all matches. The ICC awards a demerit point for a pitch and outfield that the match referee considers unsatisfactory.

If a venue receives 6 or more demerit points within 5 years, it is banned for 12 months. This means that no international matches will take place at this venue for a year. Whereas getting 12 demerit points gets you banned for 24 months.
