Last year, 10 Indians were arrested every hour for entering the United States illegally. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released data on people who entered the country illegally from October 2023 to September 2024.
According to this figure, last year, 29 million people were arrested for crossing the border illegally. Of these, 90,415 were Indians. Of these, 43,764 were arrested at the Canada-US border. According to Indian agencies, more than 50% of Indians crossing the border were from Gujarat.
However, this figure is down compared to last year. During the year 2022-2023, 96,917 Indians were arrested for illegal border crossing.
This year, the number of Indians crossing the border from Canada was the highest so far.
The Canadian border became the first choice instead of the Mexican donkey route
Border crossing figures from the Canadian side show that Indians are now using Canada as their first choice instead of the lousy Mexico route. In fact, America has increased its vigilance on the Mexican border.
At the same time, crossing the border from Canada is easier than from Mexico. Indians who have taken a visa for Canada cross the border by taxi and reach America. However, in recent years America has also strengthened checkpoints.
However, there are reports that the number of Indians arrested at the Canadian border is much lower than those crossing the border.
The donkey route costs Rs 50 to 70 lakh
The average cost of a donkey reaching America from India is Rs 20 to 50 lakh. Sometimes these expenses reach Rs 70 lakh. Agents engaged in this work promise people that the more money they pay, the fewer problems they will face.
