38 people died in a plane crash in Aktau, Kazakhstan, on Christmas Day.

Russian President Vladimir Putin apologized on Saturday for the plane crash in Azerbaijan. Putin told the Azerbaijani president that he was sorry the accident occurred in his airspace.

The Kremlin (Russian President’s Office) said:

The Azerbaijani plane arrived in Grozny on time. He tried several times to land at the airport. At the same time, Ukrainian drones carried out strikes in the airspace of Grozny, Mozdok and Vladikavkaz. The Russian air defense system was stopping them. We should therefore refrain from saying that the plane was the target of the Russian air defense system.

The Kremlin said the plane then headed to Kazakhstan and crashed near the town of Aktau on Dec. 25 at 12:30 p.m. 38 people died in this accident and 29 people were saved. The plane had reached Grozny from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.

However, the Kremlin did not specify that the plane crashed due to fire from its own air defense system. According to the AP news agency, some survivors of the plane crash also said that when the plane was in Grozny, they heard loud noises.

The Azerbaijani plane crashed on December 25 near the town of Aktau.

An aviation expert has expressed doubts about the Russian air defense system. A U.S. official and an Azerbaijani minister made separate statements on December 27 and said the cause of the accident was “external interference.” White House national security spokesman John Kirby on Friday reiterated aviation experts’ assessment that Russian defense systems responding to Ukrainian attacks were to blame for the crash. The peculiarity is that neither Kirby nor the Azerbaijani minister directly blamed Russian air defense in their statements.

Aviation experts had seen shrapnel marks on the plane in several viral videos on social media. Azerbaijan Airlines also said Friday that there were no problems inside the plane, but that the accident was due to an “external” reason.

After the crash, the plane was broken in two. Numerous holes were found in a part of the plane.

Why was Russia accused of crashing the plane? Russian military blogger Yuri Podolnyaka told the AFP news agency that the holes seen in the wreckage of the plane could have been caused by an anti-aircraft missile system. He said the damage suggests the plane may have accidentally hit an air defense missile system.

Defense expert James J. Marlow wrote on social media that he received information that Russian defense systems were intercepting Ukrainian drones in Grozny when this incident occurred. If this is true, it is possible that the defense system mistook the aircraft as a drone and attacked it by mistake.

Russia accused of jamming plane’s GPS

Flightradar24, a website that provides aircraft tracking information, made a different statement about the plane. The website reported that his GPS had jammed before the crash. Flightradar also shared a graphic related to the plane. The plane’s GPS jamming is also linked to Russia. In fact, Russia has already been accused of failing in GPS transmission.

The passenger who survived the crash said: it was as if the plane was drunk

Reuters spoke to two passengers and a crew member who were on the plane at the time of the crash. Subhonkul Rakhimov, a passenger, said:

It was as if the plane was drunk. He performed acrobatics in the air. After a while there was a huge explosion in the plane, after which we felt like it was going to break into pieces. As soon as we heard the explosion, we began to pray and prepare for our last moments.

The other passenger, Wafa Shabanova, said: “I was very scared. There were two explosions on the plane. After that, the flight attendant asked us to go back. After the explosion, there was a problem with the oxygen level in the cabin.
