Yol imposed a state of emergency in the country on December 3.
Ousted South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was arrested by police at his home on Wednesday. Yole is under criminal investigation with a view to imposing martial law in the country on December 3, 2024.
The martial law (emergency) decision was canceled by the country’s Parliament only after 3 hours. After that, on December 14, an impeachment motion was filed against Yol in Parliament and he was removed from office. The arraignment hearing was scheduled to take place at the Supreme Court on January 14, and Yol was expected to appear in court.
Yole did not appear in court yesterday. Following this, an arrest warrant was issued against him this morning by the investigation services. The police officers who came to arrest him had to face strong opposition on the spot. According to the Al Jazeera report, more than 1,000 police officers were deployed for the arrest.
Yol was arrested and brought to appear before the Corruption Investigation Bureau. The first arrest warrant was issued against him in this case.
A large number of police officers were deployed in front of Yol’s house.
Hundreds of demonstrators are present in front of Yol’s house to protest his arrest.
Police entered the house using a ladder
According to the Yonhap news agency, guards responsible for Yol’s security had barricaded themselves to stop the police. A large number of Yol supporters came to demonstrate in front of the president’s residence. After that, the police entered Yol’s house using the ladder.
Since yesterday, Yol’s arrest has been suspected due to his absence in court. Since the night, pro-Yol demonstrators had begun to gather in front of his house. Ruling party MPs and Yol’s lawyers also tried to stop the police.
Earlier on January 3, police had attempted to arrest him in corruption-related cases. However, the police were stopped at the gate by 200 of the President’s guards. Thousands of demonstrators gathered in front of Yol’s house. After the tumult which lasted about 6 hours, the police had to return empty-handed.
Clashes also took place between Yol supporters and the police.
The arrest warrant must be withdrawn from the court within 48 hours
After Yol’s arrest, the investigation services have 48 hours to question him. After that, an arrest warrant will need to be obtained from the court for his formal arrest. Yeol’s advisor, Seok Dong-hyeon, said before his arrest that Yoon Suk Yeol was willing to be questioned, provided the police officers who came to arrest him returned.
On the other hand, the court has 180 days from December 14 to examine the validity of the indictment against Yol and the accusations related to the rebellion. If 6 out of 8 Supreme Court justices vote against Yol, he will be found guilty.
If during this time Yole cannot be proven guilty or the impeachment is declared illegal, then Yole will once again become President of South Korea.
The photo is from the arraignment hearing held Tuesday. Due to Yol’s absence, the procedure only lasted 5 minutes.
Why did President Yole have to impose a state of emergency?
The South Korean Parliament has a total of 300 seats. In the elections held earlier this year, public opinion gave a considerable mandate to the opposition party DPK. The ruling People’s Power won only 108 seats, while the opposition DPK party won 170 seats. Due to its majority, the opposition DPK interfered more in the functioning of the presidential government and was unable to work in accordance with its agenda.
President Yole won the 2022 elections by a narrow margin. After that, his popularity began to decline. His image was also affected due to his wife’s involvement in many controversies. Currently, the President’s popularity is around 17%, which is the lowest among all presidents in the country.
To deal with all this, the President imposed martial law. He accused the DPK of sympathizing with North Korea and engaging in anti-national activities.
