Ousted South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol could not be arrested on Friday. Yol is under criminal investigation for imposing martial law in the country on December 3. On Tuesday, the Seoul court issued an arrest warrant for Yole.

In South Korea, officials from the agency (CIO) created to investigate scams by senior officials and the police went to the home of deposed President Yun Suk Yeol to arrest him. But about 200 guards responsible for Yol’s security arrested him at the gate itself.

Meanwhile, a crowd of protesters gathered in front of Yun’s house and began shouting slogans. There was an uproar for about 6 hours over the arrest of the deposed president, but the police were unable to arrest him.

There was a scuffle between protesters and police in Seoul.

Only 3 days left for Yoon’s arrest

The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO), which is investigating the martial law case against Yun, said:

Yoon is expected to help the investigating agency with the legal process. Despite the concern for the safety of the team present on the field, he was not arrested today.

Let us tell you that there is an arrest warrant for Yoon until January 6th. It will then be necessary to obtain a new arrest warrant against him.

The police-CIO team arrived with 150 people to arrest Yoon. Dozens of police buses and numerous officers were deployed outside the residence to arrest Yoon. After that, police officers and 20 members of the IOC team headed towards the house. Seeing the protests intensify, about 150 additional police officers arrived.

Most of these police entered the compound, but were opposed by the army and protesters. Let us tell you that even after leaving the post of president in South Korea, the responsibility for Yoon’s security remains with the army personnel.

Meanwhile, Yoon’s lawyer Yoon Gab Kyun called the arrest warrant illegal and unjust.

President Yoon gave information on television about the imposition and removal of martial law in the country.

Why did President Yole have to impose a state of emergency?

The South Korean Parliament has a total of 300 seats. In the elections held earlier this year, public opinion gave a considerable mandate to the opposition party DPK. The ruling People’s Power won only 108 seats, while the opposition DPK party won 170 seats. Due to its majority, the DPK opposition interfered more in the functioning of the presidential government and was not able to work in accordance with its program.

President Yole won the 2022 elections by a narrow margin. After that, his popularity began to decline. His image was also affected due to his wife’s involvement in many controversies. Currently, the President’s popularity is around 17%, which is the lowest among all presidents in the country.

To deal with all this, the President imposed martial law. He accused the DPK of sympathizing with North Korea and engaging in anti-national activities.

Why did the emergency end in South Korea in just 6 hours?

After President Yole declared martial law, the entire opposition reached Parliament in a short time. There should be more than 150 MPs in Parliament to repeal martial law. By the time the army arrived to capture Parliament, enough MPs had arrived at Parliament and debates had begun.

However, the army tried to stop the prosecution. Many opposition MPs who were going to vote in Parliament were arrested. Soldiers began breaking the windows of Parliament to gain entry, but by the time they got inside, 190 of the National Assembly’s 300 deputies voted against the President’s martial law proposal.

According to the South Korean Constitution, if the majority of parliamentarians demand the abolition of martial law in the country, then the government must accept it. Opposition leaders benefited from this provision of the Constitution and the army had to cease its action.

The army immediately left Parliament and returned. There were helicopters above Parliament and military tanks deployed on the road, they had to turn back.
