Army soldiers prevent MPs from voting in Parliament
South Korean President Yun Suk Yeol has withdrawn the order to impose martial law in the country. The President had announced the imposition of martial law on December 3 at 7 pm (Indian time), after which protests broke out across the country and a situation of anarchy was created.
Meanwhile, 190 deputies present in the country’s National Assembly unanimously canceled this decision, after which the president promised to lift martial law. Barely 6 hours later (1 a.m.), martial law was lifted in South Korea.
Protests began in South Korea just hours after the martial law order was lifted. Protesters demand the resignation of President Yun Suk Yeol. Six South Korean opposition parties filed an impeachment motion against President Yun Suk Yeol on Wednesday. The opposition DPK party said the vote on the matter would take place on Friday or Saturday.

What is the process for impeaching the president in South Korea?
In the South Korean Parliament, it takes two-thirds, or 200 votes, to impeach the president. Currently, the opposition parties have a total of 192 seats. In such a situation, unless some ruling party MPs vote against the president, it is difficult to impeach him.
After the arraignment, this proposal will be presented to the court. The rest of the process will only be launched if 6 out of 9 judges render a verdict against the President. Elections must take place within 60 days of impeachment. During this period, the powers of the President are in the hands of the Prime Minister.
Why did President Yole have to impose martial law? The South Korean Parliament has a total of 300 seats. In the elections held earlier this year, public opinion gave a considerable mandate to the opposition party DPK. The ruling People’s Power won only 108 seats, while the opposition DPK party won 170 seats. Due to its majority, the DPK opposition interfered more in the functioning of the presidential government and was not able to work according to its agenda.
President Yole won the 2022 elections by a narrow margin. After that, his popularity began to decline. His image was also affected due to his wife’s involvement in many controversies. Currently, the President’s popularity is around 17%, which is the lowest among all presidents in the country.
To deal with all this, the President imposed martial law. He accused the DPK of sympathizing with North Korea and engaging in anti-national activities.
A vote was held in South Korea’s National Assembly to repeal martial law.
Why was martial law lifted in South Korea in just 6 hours? After President Yeol announced martial law, the entire opposition reached Parliament in a short time? There should be more than 150 MPs in Parliament to repeal martial law. By the time the army arrived to take Parliament, enough MPs had arrived in Parliament and debates had begun.
However, the army tried to stop the prosecution. Many opposition MPs who were going to vote in Parliament were arrested. I started breaking the windows of Parliament to get inside. But by the time the soldiers arrived inside, 190 of the National Assembly’s 300 deputies had voted against the president’s martial law proposal.
According to the South Korean Constitution, if the majority of parliamentarians demand the abolition of martial law in the country, then the government must accept it. Opposition leaders took advantage of this provision of the Constitution and the army had to cease its operations.
The army immediately evacuated Parliament and returned. There were helicopters above Parliament and military tanks deployed on the road, they had to turn back.

The opposition party is working to remove the president, the defense minister and the interior minister. In addition to impeaching the president, the opposition party in South Korea is also working to impeach the defense minister and the interior minister.
Along with the demand for the dismissal of Defense Minister Kim Yong-Hyun, accusations of treason are also being made. In South Korea, anyone accused of treason can be sentenced to life in prison or the death penalty.
Opposition leaders claim the defense minister suggested the president impose martial law. Only after his order did more than 200 soldiers enter Parliament.
The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) said it would present a motion to impeach the president and the defense minister as well as the interior minister. Because together they illegally imposed martial law in the country.
