Nasrallah served as Hezbollah’s secretary general for three decades; this position has now become vacant following his death.
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli attack on Friday September 27. Israel used 80 tons of bombs on Hezbollah headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon. Besides Nasrallah, many senior Hezbollah officials were also killed in this attack. Among them was Ali Karaki, commander of Hezbollah’s Southern Front.
After Nasrallah’s assassination, the position of secretary general (head of the organization) of Hezbollah was vacant. Nasrallah became the leader of the organization in 1992. He was one of the main faces of the Shiite movement in Lebanon. The death of Nasrallah, who was the most prominent face of Hezbollah for three decades, was a major blow to the organization.
Besides Nasrallah and Karaki, Hezbollah’s top military commander Fuad Shukar (July 30) and the elite commando’s founder Ibrahim Akil (September 20) were also killed.
In such a situation, the big question is who will be the next leader of Hezbollah After the assassination of most of Hezbollah’s top leaders, two names are leading in this race. The first of them is Hashem Saifidin and the second is Naeem Qasim.
Hashem Saffieddin: a major candidate for the post of leader of Hezbollah Hachem Saffieddin’s name is leading the race for the next secretary general of the leader of Hezbollah. Saffieddin is a member of Hezbollah’s executive council and cousin of Hassan Nasrallah.
She was born in 1964 in the town of Der Kanun al-Nahar, Lebanon. Saifieddin and Nasrallah received religious education together. Both studied together in major Shiite educational centers such as Qoum in Iran and Najaf in Iraq.
Nasrallah and Saffiedine joined Hezbollah in its early days. Both were recalled from Iran during Islamic studies in the 1990s. In 1992, Nasrallah became secretary general of Hezbollah.
Just two years after Nasrallah became head of Hezbollah, Saffieddin was also named head of the organization’s Executive Council.
Over the past three decades, Saifieddin has dealt with issues such as Hezbollah’s financing and the organization’s education. While Nasrallah took care of the strategic issues of the organization. For this reason, he appears to be ahead in the race to become the next leader.
Additionally, Saifieddin comes from a prominent Shia family. Many of his family members are Shiite religious scholars and members of the Lebanese Parliament. Saffieddin’s brother, Abdullah, works as a Hezbollah representative in Iran. Saifieddin also maintains close ties with Iran.
Saffieddin’s son Redha is married to the daughter of former Iranian military general Qasim Sulemani. Qasim Sulemani was killed in a US attack in 2020.
America and Saudi Arabia declared Saifidin a terrorist.
Qasim, number 2 of Hezbollah, also in the running Hezbollah’s deputy secretary general, Naeem Qasim (71), is also in the running to head the organization. Qassim would also be number 2 in the Shiite movement and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Qassim was born in 1953 in the village of Kfar Kila in Nabatiyeh, southern Lebanon.
In the 1970s, Qasim became a member of the Shiite Amal movement in Lebanon alongside Imam Musa al-Sadr. He then became involved in the Hezbollah movement in the early 1980s and was one of the founding members of the organization.
Qasim has been providing religious education in Beirut for decades. Qasim became deputy secretary general of Hezbollah in 1991. He is also a member of Hezbollah’s Sura Council.
Qassim is one of Hezbollah’s leading religious scholars.
